the bracelet itself costs hundreds of dollars. would you really want to replace for a cheap nylon band? what's a rolex without the original band?

Lot's of vintage pieces come without original bracelets. And, as you stated, the cost to replace is enormous. Nylon is a inexpensive alternative with military history.
You want to keep that bracelet looking new? Strap a Nato to your Rolex during your next outing when scratches are likely. Then, reinstall the bracelet to add years of life to it.
