I am pleased that many of you are finding the website to be a valuable and informative resource for the 5513. With it's many dial variations, the matte dial 5513 is a favorite to both collectors and those new to vintage Rolex. Enjoy everyone.

Sounds like many new collectors as well as "seasoned" ones are finding the website helpful.
There have been a few additions recently. Nikos aka Greekbum has been very generous and sent me some Meters First images. One of the images is demonstrating the tritium glow often seen with tritium mixtures from this era. In addition a great Maxi IV image was added courtesy of Nikos as well.

Great site John!

Can anyone tell me if the 5513 was ever produced with a SWISS dial rather than the SWISS - T>25 dial?

5513 mutt?

I recently was handed down my fathers watch. I'm trying to plan a course of action to get it back in service as my father wouldnt want it any other way. I looked at the 5513 website but it seems to not match exactly any of the descriptions. The s/n is in the 1.7x range. The date on the bracelet says 3/ 71. My dad was a navy officer and wore it every day for years.
My brother was given it after dad passed in 1980. He says he had it serviced and relumed with a new crystal but they scratched the back and it only ran for a month. Hes had it in a box since.
In the end I would like a functional daily wear watch that I can say was my fathers when I hand it off to my son. Its a rolex it should be possible right?
Any input would be appreciated. I have already emailed Mike Young about restoring the bracelet.

Let me first say that you have inherited a real beauty.
The reason you did not see your dial on the website is because your dial is a gilt/gloss dial so named because of the gold tone of the text and the black glossy paint. The majority of the 1.7 mil serial 5513's would have come from the factory with a matte dial. So this may be a stroke of good fortune for you as the gilt/gloss dials tend to command a premium over the matte dial versions.
Rik Dietel, ABC Watchwerks, and Bob Ridley all do great work.
God luck and we look forward to seeing how it turns out.

I would recommend Bob Ridley, he does exceptional work and can also address the bracelet. Ive seen a few bracelets that came back from others that are really overdone and way too tight, with small details overlooked. Bob on the other hand is a perfectionist.

David thanks for the kind words.
I feel very fortunate to have had the input and support necessary from knowledgeable collectors to get the site off the ground and online. Two weeks ago Hodinkee featured 5513mattedial.com on their online magazine. In large part to the Hodinkee feature and from collectors spreading the word, the website has been viewed in over 83 different countries. In addition, many visitors to the site have have returned to learn more about this iconic reference.

Great read. Boggling levels of detail and changes....I wonder if the guys at Rolex ever contemplated that in years to come we would all sit here with loops out studying all these changes and minutia?!

Thanks for compiling.

Hi, I'm new here but I've been glued to the site for the last two hours. I didn't know my 5513 had a MK III dial, but do now! Well done and thank you so much.

Thanks
I am glad you are finding it helpful.
In addition to the two websites above, you will find a great Red Sub sticky thread at the top of the vintage Rolex discussion, and there is a fantastic review of the white dials of the 1680 in the Vrf classics section by Marcello Pisani.
Finally there is are two Gmt threads here on TRF. One in the Rolex reference library and the other by Springer here on this sub forum.
