Congrats. I’m not too far behind u. I hit 28 yrs in November. I will probably go end of next year, trying to get as close to maximum as possible. Now I just need an AD to hook me up with a special something.

Congratulations. I am a retired LEO who did 30 years and got out when I was 49, a few months shy of 50. I have been out for almost 11 years and it has been the best 11 years of my life. I did not realize how much pressure and stress I was under until I was not. I have focused on my health, lost 30 plus pounds, walk 4 miles a day and lift weights 3 days a week. I feel great and am in better shape than 30 years ago. I also spend a lot of time with my family and friends. Retirement is what we make of it. Enjoy yours and I wish you good health and a long retirement.

I whole heartedly agree with you but his statement does have some validity. Too many men I’ve known ended up dead less than a year after retirement.

An old man once told me “the secret to old age is trying to outlive your projects.” Or something along those lines. So now I’ve acquired so many projects I tell everyone I’m going to live to 90 at least.

So true.
Thats because they were brainwashed early to believe their identity and purpose was defined by their job and not who they are as an individual and it is sad to see. They never had the time to develop who they were as an adult and explore other interest and possibilities. It’s a self imposed prison term of guilt and restrictions. Most of it is the fear of the unknown to even dare to dream.
You only get one life and very few live theirs to the fullest.

Work is good for many people. Everyone is wired differently. In my profession (MD) I see many men die shortly after retirement. I will work as long as I can, but transition to part time at some point.

I tend to agree. Retirement shouldn’t be the end of your life. It should be the beginning of your life.

Like I said above, I retired at 60. I’m riding my bike an average of 10 miles a day and going to the gym 3 days. I’m physically stronger now and in better shape than when I was in my 30s and 40s, and definitely my 50s.

It’s possible that these men would have died if they were still working, too.

Anything is possible, it’s just my personal observation in the profession that I’ve been in since 1994. I’m pretty sure I have a better frame of reference than you do. Another thing I have noticed, is that they seem to get worsening dementia fairly soon after retiring. Got to keep the brain active.

Not trying to be combative, like I said, just some personal observations.

Well, I just retired, and I’m not planning to die anytime soon. I know lots of folks that are thriving after retirement.
