Thanks once again for all the congrats! Appreciated!

I have been eyeing the 5170P ever since I laid my eyes on it last year when I purchase my 5711-1R. That time, I played around and it captivated me like no other watches ever did. I know I have to have it. But the price-tag gave me pause, plus I need time to make up my mind. Fast forward to now, after Baselworld, nothing better has come out ( yes imho, not even 5172 ), I decided to get it.

And I couldn't be happier. It's an absolutely stunning looking watch. I dare say this is the most beautiful watch in my collection. The proportions, the platinum case, the amazing blue dial. It sucks you in.

The movement shot is also just as nice. While not exactly on par with Lange Datograph, truth be told, it's nevertheless very nicely finished. I wasn't able to take a proper shot yet. I'll do it later.

Goes without saying the watch is very comfortable on the wrist. I did swap out the strap to a dark blue leather strap which I think fits the watch much better. The diamond indices as everyone has pointed out, is very discrete and certainly not in-your-face at all. The dial is amazing and has a wealth of colors with different shades of blue, and is just fascinating to look at.

If there are some nitpickles, there are two actually. The crystal is rather reflective, so it's sometimes challenging to take a good shot.

Also the brighly polished platinum case seems to pick up scratches and smudges rather easily, so it's definitely not something you want to wear too casually. Overall, the case size is perfect at 39mm and as this is my first platinum watch that I own, I will venture to say the improvement of platinum over gold isn't as obvious as gold over stainless steel, but one can see the difference visually especially under good natural light. It's more shiny, more white, or some will say, more pure.

The 5170P is the last and greatest of the 5170 series. Patek has not been particularly successful with the 5170 watches so there could be lingering concern whether this watch will do wear on the long term, something that I was concerned about to post a thread on this. However, given the relatively short run, and the upsurge in interest after the watch was discontinued, and the watch's own stunning looks, I am quite confident it will hold up well. Even if it does. it shouldn't matter because I just cannot see myself selling it anytime soon.

With this addition, I shall also officially retire from watch collecting. No more new watches anymore.

congratulations! i like my 5170P (got it last week) but find it really hard to read because of the highly reflective glass cover.

I find readability generally OK because the highly polished hands really pops out from the blue dial. If can be, I will wish a bit more AR on the watch to minimize reflection.

A big congratulations Ben! Glad to see you made it to the other side. The depth of the blue dial is fine art to me, unlike any watch I have ever owned. Enjoy in good health.

Congrats Ben. Looking good.

I’d love to see this watch from a distance; a mirror shot or something. It looks good in close shots.

Fantastic! Congrats! I lost a little interest with the teaser shot of the box, but today when I scanned forward to a picture....

“Just when I thought I was out, you pulled me back in.” It’s the 5170P mafia!

Congratulations, and yes, that blue dial is captivating.

Interesting that your not alone in commenting on how reflective the crystal is...

I openly wonder if the crystal, while reflective, adds to the depth of the blue dial(?).

I only do this box shot teaser with big incomings. Love a bit of "drama".

That's a very good point. It kind of "re-inforce" the lighting contrast inside the dial. However, the reflective crystal does not in any way affect the watch visual appeal. I have had much worse example of poor AR that simply "white-wash" the entire dial of the watch.

No it's not. It's a soft toy from the Ritz Carlton Hotel. I got it for my niece when she was still small.

Thanks for replying - Had it been a teddy I would have been on the phone to my AD wanting two for my two toddlers
