I believe (and someone correct me if I am wrong) the term Texas Timex came from the oil boom days of the '80's where many became very rich, very quickly. The solid gold Day Date became so ubiquitous among the oil crowd, it gained the Texas Timex nickname.

it does pair well with a Stetson, Ostrich boots, denim and a turquoise Bolo....
