Timeless? Gotta be the 116234 blue dial, jubilee, fluted bezel white gold, roulette date wheel.

Iconic? Gotta be the 126233 champagne dial, jubilee, fluted bezel yellow gold.

Biased? Yes I am because I have both!

So nice to see a datejust topic instead of another sport model thread!

My 36mm SS DJ, white dial, Roman numerals, smooth bezel, on a Oyster Bracelet. Love it’s simplicity, and a classic. For me, a DJ should be 36mm.

In my opinion either this or one with a black dial.

Here are some pics of my daily. I picked this one because I like it, and how it looks on me. I also considered buying something that I could use daily now, and daily when I’m 70 years old or so

So I kind of took the “timeless” idea into consideration.

I didn’t pick stick markers because I wanted something without lume.

Although I do like stick dials as well.

With white, silver or champagne dial it’s hard to get more timeless

Something about those older DJ. Perfect balance. The new versions with the fluted bezels are a hair too wide. Messes with the whole proportion and takes the eyes to the bezel. The old versions you took in the whole, not the parts.

Ones preferences changes as the years pass. When I was younger I prefered the sportmodels like a Submariner. But now in my 40’s I think the Datejust will stand the test of time. It can be used in both formal and informal situation without standing out.

The success of the model is that they have updated it over the years carefully. I also think the older Datejust looks better overall. But it would probably not be as popular if Rolex had not made the small changes.

I don’t disagree. I grew up with one DJ and the classic 36mm sizing. I am not one for fads so dislike the larger cases, even if it is here to stay. That said, the changes Rolex is making appear (to my eye) to be out of proportion. For example the larger bezel does draw the eye to the bezel and away from the watch almost appears too wide. Same with the the new maxi cases make the case and bracelet look like a block attached to a band. The older cases blended seamlessly, from the case into the band. I also would opine that the changes Rolex is making is in general compared to the last 40 years, less about function and more about form.

I see your point, but in terms of function vs form, I would argue that any modern Rolex will do what it’s intended function originally was while simultaneously having better overall build and longevity than 40 years ago. Aesthetically they differ, but in terms of function they are still what they always were and more (take the sub for example - it’s depth rating has only increased since original launch).

And in terms of a DJ, the function is to tell time and date. They still do that, and with solid link bracelet construction they probably hold out better than old DJs do and now have an updated movement as well. So function is there, aesthetics change and can certainly be a matter of preference.

That's a very old picture used to help illustrate the timelessness of the DJ.

I've been a Samsung man since the S3 and I'm currently using the S10+.

Silver stick as well.

Here’s my DJ and feel the configuration is also pretty timeless.

TT champagne dial close second, but that is more iconic than timeless. I think that configuration is very much of a particular time.
I agree with this.. either of those two are what I think of when I hear classic datejust.

In my opinion I think the Datejust 36, fluted with jubilee (steel) would be the most timeless configuration. Blue/black dial. A watch that can go with anything at any time.

Completely slipped my mind actually, i'll actually make a new post right now with pics and my thoughts on it since I've had it for a little over than a week.

Great choice btw, definitely a stunner. I personally feel that the 41mm works best with the Oyster bracelet with the smooth bezel (Totally biased though because I have that exact one). The bracelet almost looks integrated when paired with the smooth bezel and it just looks super sporty and elegant.

I feel like the 36 wears differently than the 41 and not that one is too small or too big (I have a 7.3 inch wrist size and own both). The 41 feels more sporty and rugged, and makes you want to hike up mountains with it on. The 36mm, feels much more delicate, dressy, and dare I say, Feminine. It's not that the 36mm is necessarily too small, it just takes some getting used to and provides a different experience while wearing it.
