I must confess to a little excitement... I got a joyous text message from Rolexroz an hour ago which read:

"On its way"

A brand new 39mm Explorer should arrive tomorrow or Monday.

I seem to be rather more excited about it than I ever have been about my polar Exp II (16570)... but don't tell it otherwise it'll get jealous and then there'll be trouble.

I have been meaning to post this for a while, regarding the heritage of the Explorer model. I was given a Rolex periodical from my AD recently that covers Rolex sports watches. In the Explorer I article, Rolex quotes from the letter received from Sir John Hunt, leader of the 1953 Everest climb, sent after Sir Edmund Hillary's success. (Hillary did himself wear another watch--the Rolex was carried by his sherpa, Tensing Norgay).

I don't want to quote copyrighted material, but the net of it is he attributes the following key points to Rolex OP watches used by the team:

Synchronization of time between base camp and climbers. Accuracy of watches.
Strength of case-protected movement from humidity at lower altitudes and low temperatures at higher elevations. Impervious to snow/humidity.
The self-winding mechanism--impossible to take off gloves to wind watch at bitter cold altitudes. Also, given oxygen deprivation, it was possible to forget to wind watches.

It also points out that Rolex was used in other unsuccessful attempts to scale Everest, such as in 1933, when the Ruttledge expedition got to within of 1000 feet of the peak, but had to turn back. So a heritage had been established long before 1953.

You could probably take any modern Rolex to the top of Everest today with the same or better performance, but I thought it was interesting that these were the attributes which earned accolades in 1953, and lead to the introduction of the Explorer as a dedicated model later in that year.

Just purchased my very first Rolex, an Explorer I 39mm and have to say its perfect for my tastes!

I plan on eventually handing it down to my son one day and feel this watch has the class to be the heirloom piece I was looking for.

Now it's time to start saving for a President Day-Date in white gold!

Just purchased my very first Rolex, the Explorer I 214270 and couldn't be happier! I've deliberated for months on which Rolex to buy and for me, this one fits the bill. Classic yet understated, and something I plan to pass on to my son when the time comes (my wife is due in just 2 more weeks!).

For the price, this watch just can't be beat!

Love the pics you've posted up here and will surely post some of my own once I sit down with the camera for a little photo shoot with my new toy.

I don't recall any Explorer I having lug holes.

Yes. The switch-over was in the middle of the S series. (1993/94). All models before that had drilled through lug holes.

SMALL wrists so deciding to go 114270. Anyone know the main differences between, D-P and Z series. I'm guessing its not cosmetic but more calibration changes..I could be wrong I am super newb...

V-Series 114270 purchased from DavidSW....
He said it would show up around 12ish today. USPS dropped it off, opened box and first thing I did was take a picture. Notice it was about 18 seconds past 12, close enough. I still had the cover over crystal (bit excited at the moment)

Then we went for a walk in NYC....

Finished the day off BBQ'ing with my new watch
