But why oh why do the "Doubting Thomas's" have to make known with such enthuasim their doubts. Instead why don't they discuss their concerns via a private message with the OP?

Some people always have to remain negative about everything and can never be pleased for the other person.

What happened to "Innocent until proven Guilty" which from what I have read through the item. the OP has not been granted!!

This public style of "Attack" on a new member, is certainly the type of conduct which is likely to scare away other potential new members.

I for one would like to thank Dave for taking the time to post the thread, as well as passing on my congratulations, surely this is a dream that most of have had at one time. :) I would also like to wish both Dave and his Aunt all the best now and in the future.

^^^ +100. If the OP were trying to sell these watches, then the "spider sense" should be tingling. But if he's simply providing a "backstory" of how he came into contact with these watches, what's the need to try and shoot holes in his story?

I think a lot of people lose sight of the fact that Rolex produced something close to (if not more than) 9M timepieces that could be considered "vintage". There are still plenty of vintage Rolexes that haven't yet come into contact or possession of vintage dealers and collectors, so stories like this aren't far-fetched. Which is why both dealers and collectors talk about "the chase".......

Tony, first, this is a fairly unusual story. i believe it. however, many people dont or are jealous. Paladin, this is not an attack on you, but i agree that we should be careful when dealing with new members posting these pics. if the watches were depicted separately i coudl give more support for the theory that they were stolen pics and the story was concocted. however, they were photographed together, seemed scratched and worn. incomplete. time not set, etc. i would be kinder and more understanding to the OP.

the way you presented it is the reason a lot of folks remain lurkers. I can't vouch for the OP or discredit him but can tell you these things happen - my uncle, attorney practicing on Park Ave in NYC passed and it was 7-8 years later my aunt asked me about helping her open the gun vault he'd built or had built in the basement

she'd probably thought about doing it a number of times but it probably wasn't the "focus of her life". At the time no one in the family thought it unusual.

We got the safe open, found a number of Perazzi over/unders - all trap guns and some other items. The shotguns conservative value in the $40-50k range - and i sold one for her to a national level competitor that won the national championship with it two years ago - he sent us a shot of him holding it being presented the trophy at the event, and i passed it on to my aunt. So i know these things do happen.

these things happen - again, i don't fault you your skepticism but it could have been presented a little more clinically without derision to the OP.

Not too many people beyond the members of this forum would think twice about those watches. Trust me, only a select few would take a look at those and actually understand what they are looking at, let alone what they are worth. 20 years ago they were just beat up watches. Congrats to the OP for his family's find. I for one am happy for you. I'd imagine the doubters are jealous...shoot, I believe you and I'm jealous. The only thing I'll find in my family's basement is cat piss every damn kitchen utensil my grandma ever bought.

This is a dream come true. GMT has a gilt dial I believe, and the Daytona is worth 15k or over. Niko is right not to touch the watches, but I wonder maybe if you purchased a tube of Poly watch to clean the acryllic crystals? It would really make the dials pop.

Congrats - those are some very fine watches with exceptional heritage

If you do send these watches for service with Bob Ridley or another watchmaker, I would strongly recommend sealing the hands on the GMT to prevent further flaking.

I have no reason to doubt this guy, however he stated that he was in and out of his aunt's place in about 15 minutes, which is the timeframe when the pics were alledgedly taken. Look at the pic of the 2 watches together, noting the time on each piece. Then, note the time specifically on the GMT in the pic of it alone as opposed to the one of the two together. That discrepancy is kind of glaring, but I'm probably reaching.

FWIW, the exif data on the OP's pics shows that they were taken on May 23rd between 2:13 pm and 2:39 pm, so it was over a twenty-six minute span-- not really a whole lot different than fifteen minutes, when it comes down to it (i.e. it was less than half an hour).

It was the guy's dad.
There was also a photo of him and Reeve too.
That beat up original Sub went for like $60K on ebay.
Had it been serviced with new dial and hands it won't be anywhere near $20K I'd assume.
