No need to be shy or embarrassed. A simple thanks… “I’m a watch guy” and move on. Saying “it’s fake” makes you look tacky. If some woman complement your wife’s Diamond ring would you expect her to say “it’s not real”??? Women love to say their jewelry is fake in public..

I agree. I don't agree with the "it's a fake" thing. It has been mentioned in several other threads. I understand why you *might* say this if you felt threatened. It goes back to the fact that the if the person wants your watch and is threatening you, it really doesn't matter if it is fake or real. Someone will likely take it from you by force.

I recall a thread where someone talked about getting held up and taking their watch off, forcefully throwing it down on the concrete to destroy it, and still getting beat up. Could be I'm recalling a "what if" situation, but I can actually see it going down this way.

Just enjoy your watches, insure them, and don't worry about it. When it all comes down to it, it is just a watch. Not worth getting hurt over.

Nah, not really. I bought the watches to wear them. But I also don’t like to be noticed. It’s baked into my personality at this point.

All the belly aching in this thread is unbecoming. I can’t help but think of my uncles that fought in WWII.

One stormed the beach at Normandy. Another fought at Iwo Jima. Those two lived to tell about it. A third one was killed. I never met him.

Anyway, I just can’t imagine any of them worrying about someone pointing out their Rolex at a restaurant.

I told a guy sitting in Apple waiting for laptop repair while I was waiting for a new iPhone that I liked his "John Mayer" Daytona. He was really cool about it. I was wearing a black dial SS Daytona. He told me all about his buying experience, etc. I left before him. I don't think anyone got "up tight" over it.

If the guy intended to rob you, he wouldn't not have commented.

All depends on the situation? I had others complement me on a watch or shirt I am wearing before and it does not bother me, but they don’t yell Rolex or Patek, AP!
That would make me very uncomfortable too. Once that happens it would be hard not to think about what could happen..

A bit cringe maybe, but if you wear a “fancy” watch out in public, you may be subject to the odd comment.

No different from driving an equally nice car, and someone saying “nice Porsche mate”, or similar.

I’ve had comments before when wearing a Rolex, Hulk especially. These comments often lead on to some nice conversations.

Hope the OP does not drive anything fancy....he would collapse and turtle in a fetal position. Driving fancy or exotic cars garners the most compliments from all walks of life. A simple smile and thank you is all it takes. If you act as the OP did, again, you give off the vibe that the Rolex owner is a douche snobby guy. Wanting to wear a long sleeve shirt in Florida because some kid with his dad comments a little boisterous in a restaurant is over the top....just sell your Rolex and get something waaaaay under the radar.

In most of these type scenarios it’s situational.

Firstly, we all interpret things differently based on our individual lense. The surroundings, the person making the comment, the timing of the comment etc etc.

Generally speaking I find a comment directed as a compliment welcomed. If I sense it’s a dig, then not so much.

In this specific example I’d have to be there to know whether the young chap was being genuine or not

I think he was being genuine, but his comment was out of the blue, too loud and over enthusiastic. He attracted unwanted attention. Had it been a situation where he and I had been talking for a bit and he made the comment, that would have been different.

Best way to avoid that situation, don't drive the Ferrari or wear certain timepieces. Like others, have met many very interesting people over the decades who appreciate Ferrari cars, and timepieces, and....

I agree. That said, this guys approach was out of the blue as I was passing by minding my business, far too loud and overly enthusiastic. Had it occurred during a one on one interaction, I wouldn’t have thought anything of it.

Being a huge watch enthusiast, I compliment people's watches all of the time when I see someone wearing something cool. I have to say, so many different reactions! Some engage and start talking about watches. Some just give you a weird look and say oh thank you......then walk away like they are offended by the comment. Most are pretty positive though. I would never do it loudly, or so that it would attract surrounding attention. Not cool imo.
