I feel you, I would rather live with it than parting the 800.00

Having said that if spending the 800 bucks makes you a happier person and my answer is Why not?

I'd live with it for a while and see how much it bothers you.
You already know the cost to fix it.

So you've read all the thoughts on this by now. Why not think about it from a least to most expensive standpoint?

1) leave it. Costs nothing. Well maybe your psychological well being.
2) have someone polish it. Cost is minimal. Worst case scenario you need to get it replaced.
3) get it replaced. $825 as you stated before - but if it makes you happy go for it. Worst case scenario you are out $825.

Doing 1 or 2 doesn't preclude you doing 3 somewhere down the line. Doing 3 rules out 1 or 2.

Have at it!

I managed to ding the lug on my Subc after less than a month and it bothered the hell out of me...for a day. Then I realised that it wasn't really noticeable unless I looked at it at a certain angle, so I stopped looking at it that way. I also realised that it's just a watch, an expensive watch maybe, but just a watch.
Leave it for a while and you may find it doesn't bother you too much. It may save you money to put towards another Rolex...

With an impact like that, you might want to have the piece serviced anyway

No big deal, it's the worlds greatest tool watch IMHO!

I would leave it as is and like others have said, maybe get a polish done from a qualified jeweler. At the time of service make the call then.

People are upset. I sold my my six digit ceramic sub last year because i felt it was too nice of a watch to wear as a tool watch. Accidently smacking a door jam should not cost you 800 bucks. The OP should be glad its not gold because Rolex wanted 2200 bucks 2 years ago to fix mine.

I did find it ridiculous that they can replace the ceramic insert without the bezel and not the other way around ... but I wasn't going to start arguing with them. Also, I think the $825 would be in addition to the regular service cost .... so probably close to $1,500 when all is said and done.

I've been wearing the watch on and off for almost 4 years (originally bought new from DavidSW!). I don't think it "needs" a service yet but if it's going to be at the RSC then might as well.

I would like to find a well recommended watchmaker that is up to the task of a quality polish (and possibly a laser weld on the missing chunk). I am obviously very hesitant to have some random jeweler do a hack job on it.

I've been doing some searching on TRF and have come across Bob Ridley of Watchmakers International so far (edit: due to some issues some members have had with him that might not be the best idea).

I bought my first Rolex in 1986. It was a 16800 transitional Sub. I wiped it down daily and when the clasp would get a scratch in it I would gently buff it out with steel wool to keep it looking new. About a month or two after I bought it, I accidentally ran it against a concrete wall and somehow put a good scratch in the bezel insert. I was mortified!! I immediately brought it back to the AD and had the insert replaced for the outlandish price of $75. Sure enough, right after getting it back I was pulling laundry out of the dryer, caught the bezel on the lip of the dryer opening, and 'pop!' Off came the bezel... discovering the bezel in the heap of damp clothes, sure enough, there was a pretty good gash on it just about where yours is. After having to again bring it back to replace the click spring, I was over the "new car, first scratch" phenomena... now I just look forward to seeing the watch in like new condition when it comes back from servicing every few years....

Ugh. Shite situation, it's easy to say 'hey, live with it!' but every time you look down at it you will notice. :( if it were me I would probably resentfully live with it.

For $825 you might as well wait till you have a fews more dings in it before going all out and replace it. Doesn't look that bad.

If this were a datejust or some kind of dress watch I would say replace it, but I think tool watches look great with some scratches & dings. :)

From my perspective, if it was a dress watch it would be an issue. As the most rugged sports, dive watch in Rolex's line however I think is perfectly in line with the watches purpose. A sports watch should have some scratches and dirt to in part to display it living up to its supposed durability. I think if someone is regularly cleaning and polishing a steel sports watch they should have instead opted for a white gold model or a dress watch. The GMT I inherited from my grandfather clearly displays the 33 years of his daily wear and makes it special.

i would try and get it polished as best as possible if it is only going to be a small fee.

see how you feel in another month or so of wear. imo it will bother you less as time goes on. if it still is bothering you in a few months then replace it

Cheers

Hmmm...I don't know what I would do. I would probably want it repaired initially but if it wasn't super visible I would probably get over it after a few days and save the $825.

Let it be for a few months. If it's still nagging at you daily... Then you'll know what to do.

Leave it. You did it on a 100M dive trying to repair a fractured pipeline. Right?

I dropped a (non-Rolex) dive watch from waist high on a dock about 6 months ago with a similar result. Now I forget that the mark is there unless for whatever reason I closely look at my watch. Just leave it and in 6 months you'll forget all about it it. Fix it if you plan to flip it.

I say leave it. If it is rough or sharp I may have polished down but other than that. No way I am spending $800 on fixing that. I would get another one the next week if I did that.

I'd wait and replace it when it needs a movement service. Until then just leave it.

My only concern would be: does that bezel hurt if I touch it? Is the damaged edge too sharp? If the answers are no I'll keep it this way and get it replaced at service in five years time or so.
