Agree up to a point but Rolex do make very fine watches, yes they are mass produced and mostly machine made, but many of todays younger age whose sole information cupboard is in so called social media, Instagram, Youtube etc. And many now do what ever social media dictates what to buy, as many buy the Rolex hype to wear it. As so called social media have taken over there lives and use of there own brain power.

They are not high horology, low production, etc., which I think makes it easier to stomach getting turned away. Try to buy a Bugatti and get turned away, you feel like, OK I get it limited, etc. Try to buy a BMW 5 series and get turned away, and you feel like, screw them! If Rolex wants to play this game, they had better start hand finishing some movements and building real complications, not just limiting supply. Discerning buyers will not be fooled.
Rolex is not limiting supply, why do people always fall back on that fallacy to explain the empty shelves in AD’s and full stock in Grey Dealers? It is simply not true that Rolex is limiting supply, they are making as many or more watches than ever. It is soaring demand, and AD’s moving portions of their stock to Grey Dealers, nothing more than that.

Consider buying a Tudor. Of course, I'd never recommend buying a watch that you don't want in place of one you do - but at least consider it. Go and try some on, you may be surprised.

It'll save you plenty of cash too - all for more watch purchases

The economy is in the gutter. Pretty sure people will be jumping out windows because they can't pay the bills. These AD's are all going out of business. The flippers will stop buying and taking massive losses! We've waited this long. In a few months AD's will be kissing everyone ass because their precious "high valued customers" with 25+ watches will stop buying because their wife just left them because they have no job. Once an AD actually sells me my new Rolex i'll ask them to thank me for keeping them employed! Payback is a bitch and these ADs on their high horses will be on the street.

Almost every Rolex model is an "allocation piece" ... meaning, one cannot "order" it. ADs receive allocations and have no idea what is in each week's/month's/year's allocation deliveries. That is why they cannot take an "order."

You can, however, ask to be placed on the "list" of people wanting a specific model (i.e. let's say you want a blue dialed Yachtmaster 40). Knowing your interest in that model, your salesperson may contact you if he/she/they (for you non-binary people) receive one and you are designated as a buyer.

That is why so many people are frustrated with Rolex at this time ... the customer does not have control over the situation, the sellers do. To be honest, I personally love the current situation. It's kinda like a game and I enjoy participating in it. When you do get "the call" it makes it even more fun/special to receive the watch.

I sure hope you're right.

The regular "man on the street" collector has been completely shut out.
- ADs only sell to whales
- The big greys only sell to those willing to pay 2-5x MSRP

I have a long standing relationship with two Rolex AD’s, they are small, family owned jewelers that do a good business in prosperous suburban towns. They’ve said that allocations are up from precovid, +4% in 2021, another +5% so far this year. Their long-standing customers, not necessarily collectors, want these watches, plus they’re deluged with requests, phone calls, emails, in store visits from new prospective customers for Rolex watches. They say it’s astounding the level of demand, coming from all over the country.

And the rash of smash and grab robberies over the last year or so is a big reason their display cases are bare; and Rolex has encouraged this kind of security planning.

As for easy availability of the most in demand models at the Grey dealers, it’s is my personal opinion that such ample supply can not be the result of individual buyers who then just flip their watch for a quick profit. That much volume, in my opinion, can only be the result of either direct or indirect moving of inventory from the Authorized dealers.

Local Rolex dealer Wouldn’t take my order

They stopped taking order for a year now. Managing 500+ phone calls a day isn’t feasible for them, long term.

Nobody is willing to accept “not here yet”.
All 500+ callers want detail explanation. Half of those callers will begin to complain immediately.

The absolute right thing to do for ADs and Boutiques is not to accept order.

Some of those callers will start threads on watch forums to disparage their SAs and AD. Lol.

People suck! this thread and this OP explained everything you need to know.. It has nothing to do with the economy.

Entitled idiots are more entitled and more idiotic.
This dude already got 6 watches from his AD, yet, willingly toss them under a bus, and proudly doing so.

If I were OP’s AD, I’ll tell him to go suck on a shoe.

Oh so you think OP is "entitled"?

*Ahem*.... he should certainly have some kind of 'relationship' by now, I think his complaint is legit:

I remember reading similar posts at the early stages of COVID ... and look what happened.

Not that I am disagreeing with the economies suffering, but I do think your doom and gloom scenario for AD, grey market, and (even the) flippers is off. Or should I say, wishful thinking on your part.

Just in the US, the household wealth has gone over $150 Trillion for the first time ever.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/10/hous...e-in-debt.html

The wealth gaps between the halves and halve-nots (across the world) is very high. If you think a dip in the economy is going to stop those people from buying Rolexes and maintaining their "high valued customer" status ... you are a bit naïve. The dip in the economy will definitely hit those that are not financially secure. Which means more watches for those that are. As Warren Buffet says, "He is buying when others are selling."

Not saying your statement has no merit ... it will be the lesser demanded watches that you will see drop in price and become more available. Watches like Datejusts, AirKings, Milguass, etc. will become more likely. It will take a very prolonged time of "economy being in the gutter" before you see Daytonas, GMTs, and Subs readily available.

So, if "payback is a bitch" means you can finally get your Datejust at the AD over the course of the next few years ... have at it. :D

I would be initially surprised and concerned (if i were not informed) that a store with a giant Rolex sign wouldn't take an order for a watch too. I don't see it as entitlement, but maybe a bit aloof...

Product shortages is generally a new phenomenon right now (like there are 2 year waitlisted toyota rav4 prime in the united states right now) I would take it as a sign to be patient as covid recovery continues and large economies try and reign in inflation and the resulting asset prices declines that have occurred already in many places cascade through. Even if we've reached the bottom already normal people are going to have their fill at some point as supply increases in all product categories.

Specifically - Rolex doesn't have something like a new ceramic steel pepsi GMT or ceramic steel Daytona in their wings. The hype really started with the those two pieces and they were sort of the final culmination of the 6 digit era transition. What are they going to do once there are 10 million good quality 6 digit steel ceramic bezel sports watches floating around, that are so well made to be like new after 25 years, to keep the hype going? Is wealth distribution and the current trends going to keep up with production?

And if you just want a Rolex today to celebrate, get a datejust second hand like new, which is many ways a more honest watch than a submariner doesn't dive or a daytona that doesn't time races.

Agree 100% , the volumes moving through grey dealers cannot be purely down to individual flippers , in my opinion the massive volume moving through grey dealers must be organised and it is no wonder people wondering into AD off street can't get a Rolex .

OP, it doesn’t work that way.
Most ADs don’t take orders because they never know what they are going to receive when.
They can put you on a wait list but allocation doesn’t always go by waitlist. Also most ADs have very long wait lists and May not be adding more. It is an unfortunate situation but there is no ground for a legitimate complaint against the dealer.

Because they won't one day be able to sell every Rolex they have in stock for MSRP? It will have a potential to reduce Rolex profit margins but if that's all they depend on to stay in business, they wouldn't be ADs to start with.

Yet again, another thread full of wistful revenge fantasies, based on what?

I would laugh even harder if it was a Daytona SS (or any sought after piece for that matter).

How can they possibly take an order when they don’t have watches to sell.

You can’t get a McDonald’s ice cream cone if the machine is broken. Complain all you want. Even Elon Musk can’t buy his way through that one

I appreciate the thought, time, and effort that you gave to respond (and would have loved to read your opinion). Again, I don’t think you were wrong, the economy is not good and looking worst for the (near and possible longer) future. Just the effect on the Rolex market may not be as dramatic.
