I say wear it on a NATO or a strap. Much lower key. Gotta wear it 247 though. If you're emotionally attached to the sub now, wait til you've workn it through college. That's what dreams are made of buddy.
Other than that I'd go with an Omega Speedmaster. If you want an automatic with date, then you're in luck because those are fairly *affordable*. Good luck.

I think I've made up my mind.
Tag Heuer Formula 1. Its quartz, but im willing to deal with that (plus i can take it off and have it still keep time sans a winder, and its more accurate) I can get one for around ~650 Brand new. The question now is... Black face or White face? I have the SS sub so I'm thinking of going with the white face now. Anything I should know? Also, anyone have experience with the tricounty flea market in levittown, new york? I know that sounds sketchy as all hell, but they're upstairs is a jewelry exchange. The booths have some legitimate Rolex's(most have used ones, mostly SS Subs) Thats where I was quoted 650 for the F1 Tag and I heard something on the radio that was a promotion that might get me 10% more off in that jewelry exchange. Otherwise my friends dad knows a person in the jewelry district in the city and his site quoted 650 as well. If you have any advice for a novice watch purchaser, please lemme know! |

I've always been fond of the Seiko watches too.
Some of the best for the money. However, you should visit your local insurer (State Farm) and get a policy on the watch itself. Usually less than $100 per year. They will give you full replacement value for it. |

I just graduated college last year. During my first year I bought a brand new seamaster Bond (2531.80), and wore it everyday to college. Not a single problem, wore it to bed, took it off in the AM to shower (keeping the watch in the bathroom with me of course), and no issues whatsoever. Only one person happened to notice it, asked "hey, isn't that the James Bond watch", I said yes, about 3 minutes of chatting about watches, and that was it. As for bringing a genuine $5,000+ Rolex to college, I would not hesitate to, however I would WEAR it EVERWHERE I went.

If you are going to spend 650, I say at the least get something with some soul.............something with a mechanical movement preferrably automatic. It's just me, but paying that kind of money for an electronic watch these days is just silly. Sorry Quartz fans, I don't intend to be offensive, it's just how I feel. I vote for the Invicta 9937 as well. If you like the sub I can't imagine not liking it for the purpose you intend it to serve. That's my advice to a novice watch purcahser. Best of Luck, Patrick

If you want a quartz, I think Phillip Stein could be a good choice. It has Teslar which could be good for your health as well. If it needs to be auto then Seiko all the way.

I just picked up this Zodiac V-Wolf, and I like it. It's Swiss Made, Swiss Quartz, and at 44mm with a 22mm lug width, it is quite substantial. It has a lot of great features like screw down crown and back, sapphire crystal, day/date function, 300M rating, and diver wetsuit extension. There are no end links, so a strap can easily be installed, and looks good, in fact some V-Wolf models are supplied with a rubber strap instead of the bracelet. It has a unique look and presence, combining the shape of the classic Zodiac divers of the 70's with a modern look. The only things I wish it had, and I would gladly pay more for these features, are an automatic movement, and better lume, but at about $100 delivered from the Zodiac US distributor (Fossil USA), it is a huge amount of watch for the money. The bracelet alone is worth at least that IMO.

The thing with the invicta is 1. I already have the Sub, and if i was that dead set on the sub in college i would stick it out and wear it. In getting another high end watch(as far as an 18 year old is concerned) I'm having another high quality choice of watch down the line. Also, I have the invicta auto submariner. The invicta fell apart with the crown not screwing down, the cyclops scratching, The bezel regularly falling off, the gold plating wearing off, incredible inaccuracy, no power reserve to speak of, plus it is a knock off. If i wanted a knock off of my sub, i take the 45 minutes trip to china town and pick one up. all that being said, as far as automatic is concerned, i appriciate all the options you guys have suggested, but many seem to be just Sub imitations, which given the status of the real sub, is expected. The seiko diver is great, for example, but it is really just a disproportioned sub. The Tag on the other hand is unique, a prestigious brand, a super comfy band... idk... I guess i can summarize in saying, this new watch will not completely take my wrist time for the rest of my life. It will share with the sub(at least after college) so having two sub's wouldn't be very effective for me. My tastes are... Don't really like the look of the zodiacs, seikos, or the tackiness of the invicta. The seamaster was always in my head but at 11-1200 i would want something new (at least in an omega) and im not very fond of the bond omega at any rate... theres too much going on in the band. |

I used to think that I wanted a TAG, but not so much anymore. I think that the plastic bezel on some models turned me off to the brand. Nowdays if I'm going to pay more than a few hundred for a watch, I would rather just wait for something special...like a Rolex.
I saw this nice Citizen on another forum where someone was asking what was the best all around watch for the most affordable price. It is the BM6400 and it has Eco-Drive with a 180 day reserve, screw down crown and caseback, anti-reflective hardened mineral crystal, great lume and 200M rating. It has a 5 year warranty and is available with either a nylon strap, or SS bracelet. Apparently they can be found new for $100 with strap, and $150 with bracelet.

X2 on this - Used Speedmaster or Seamaster.... would be great. Might be worth a decent amount later on if you want to sell or trade. Other brands - not so much - IMHO

Definitely look at Seiko>>
Best buy for the money across the board. Rich in history and high in quality. You can get a gently used Seiko Marinemaster for about $1,300. You would be hard pressed to find a finer timepiece at even twice that price.
