I think we've sufficiently noted that the dial is likely not genuine. Doesn't mean the rest of it isn't.

Really? I have seen baguettes, and they are straight rectangles. The ones in question are tapered, more trapezoidal. See my examples..

Here is the Baguette I know at 6 and 9..

I said his dial wasn't authentic but this one is.

Rolex has made a lot of different shapes of diamonds.

Icon19 I'm not sure this one is real either...?

I found this one on Ebay. Well, there's at least a few with the same tapered baguettes...

Don't listen to anyone on here over an AD. If you have doubts get a second opinion from another AD.

lots of aftermarket dials and bezels are popular in the Rolex scene. Modifying Rolex watches have been a new niche subculture in recent years. These tuners have done what Rolex was afraid or could not do. Adding special touches for the demanding customers into cutting edge haute couture fashion.

Some enthusiasts like to modify cars, luxury homes, and yachts. Having a generic looking Hermes, Rolex, AP straight from the factory run the risk of being mundane in the high society. Don't want to be just another birkin, daytona, ROO owner. Check out these watch tuners

Yeah ADs know everything about the 70s references of a brand they're selling.

They make some crazy stuff. The one posted above is a 18956 BRIL. They go for about $278K US.

Those boutique Rolexes are fun. The Himalaya in the first link is awesome. And the simulator in the last link is pretty fun to play with.

Oh, and that watch looks legit. Did the dummy at the AD even bother to explain to you how he arrived at his opinion?

The listing on eBay (from Beckertime) states the dial is refinished with the diamonds added (rather poorly I think) and the bracelet is after market. The OPs dial has a lot better workmanship at least.

24 posts and joined this month; clearly an expert, fwiw.

Love the bark DD; very cool. Agree about the dial however. Not certain why so many have to add diamonds to Rolexes? Saw some recently on a guys first Rolex, an SS Datejust no less. Not good. I didn't get to discuss his watch with him. I guess for an expensive watch diamonds make it seem worthwhile.

I've yet to see anything from Beckertime I'd consider owning. So many have aftermarket bracelets and dials. Every time I see the name I cringe.

I think you will always appreciate the watch no matter what as it was your fathers. It was my father's GMT 16713 that he wore as a pilot that made me a life long fan of Rolex. It is partially about the incredible quality and all that is a Rolex, but it is largely that it makes me feel close to my father when I wear my GMT and recall all the memories of him with his on! That said, after what this "insensitive and ignorant" AD said to you, if you are anything like me, you will probably want concrete clarification. I think you have to decide what that is. If hearing from Rolex is what is going to make you feel the best then send it in. I have been buying and trading Rolex for the last 13 years. Not nearly as long as some. I have never had ( for me) a bad experience with Rolex Service Center in Dallas. If you call in to their customer service I have in fact usually spoken to the same person. 214-871-0500 is the number to Rolex in Dallas, TX. There are many who would say you don't need that etc, I respect their opinions. I am of the opinion that Rolex is still the ultimate expert on their products. Good luck and enjoy your father's watch.

Dealers say "counterfeit" where they really mean to say "not completely original." The AD near me (Kempf's Jewelers in Indialantic, FL) told me my 1601 was not authentic because it had a diamond dial (which I knew was not original).

I think the best bet is to find a 'bench guy' (some small family jeweler) that has been doing this for decades and isn't incentivized to lie to you and ask them for their opinion.

Most of the time they're just happy to see [prospective] customers walk through the door.

So, the guy you're talking to was last active on this forum on October 18th. Just a heads up, in case you wonder why he hasn't responded to your post.

So if you buy a Rolex in good faith from a non-AD, and a part or parts are not authentic, Rolex might confiscate the entire watch if it is sent to RSC?
