I realized it was from the light hitting my bezel.

Personally, I like my DJ a little more than the Sub. I find the DJ more comfortable, lighter, and the new movement is amazing — my DJ only gains like a second a week. Conversely, the timing bezel of my SubC is super handy, the symmetrical dial is beautiful, and I tend to “think” about it less as I consider it my beater.

Below are some pics that may help.

I will eventually get both like many have done before me. Your post was helpful.

The DJ41 looks smart. What color dial?

I don't think the specific model Rolex is as important as how you wear it. Don't hide it, but don't wave it under everyone's noses. The watch should be clean and well kept. Patina is fine, but not battle scars. I think the brand speaks for itself.

Sub with date. Timeless and understated. If being conspicuous is your concern, go casual with a Sub.

I would like to portray some success, but not seem arrogant. I interact mostly with first time home buyers.

More importantly, I would like to enjoy the watch and grow my collection.

I certainly don't want to be arrogant. I wear short sleeves 90% of the time.

I'll happily wear any Rolex model. It's just difficult to choose one :)

Is it just me or do any others think the DJ41 has massive wrist presence? Esp on the fluted bezel it looks like a blazing fire on the wrist lol. I went with a 36 as my work watch to complement my SubC ND weekend watch as the 41 personally felt a bit over the top in a business setting. Probably works for bigger guys but I have puny wrists.

I wear my black dial sub to the office all the time. Love it. I’m a bank exec. We don’t wear suits anymore, but even if we did, I’d still wear it. Nothing wrong with a DJ either. I just prefer the sub.

Looking for 1 to do all things - SubC as it’s the most versatile. Dress it up or down it rocks it all.

SubC really isn’t a dress piece. It’s a professional tool watch. I own one and it is decidedly not dressy.

It’s clever marketing for sure. I don’t happen to agree. I’m not sure why they pushed the Sub as a dress watch when the Datejust is clearly a better dress piece. Subs look way out of place with a suit and especially French cuffs. Absurd.

Wearing a 'Sub' and a dinner suit implies your a ready for anything, action-man
kinda guy, has parked his Mondeo (estate) fairly close to a DB7 and probably knows someone who's read the full spec' on a PPK, yes?
Rolex, eh.......
We've all fallen for it, in our own way, havent we?

To be fair tho, I’ve been in many c suite meetings where Management teams have worn a sub. I have not seen a date just in meetings except mine. I have seen The older folks with the all gold day date.

But the sub is clearly a great tool watch.

Wrong. Technically speaking, a DJ isn’t a dress watch either. It’s no more of a dress watch than a Sub is. However, with said, both work for me.

This is a dress watch.

Is this even debatable? SS Date-Just = Business professional.

A DJ41 would be as suitable as a Sub. Business professional does not mean you need to wear a dress watch. It just means something you can wear to work / in the office. Either would be fine in my opinion. They're both comfortable enough in business attire as they are casual wear. I know as this is a dilemma I've been toiling with for months.

Ultimately if 2 watches are an option I think both could easily end up in the collection simultaneously at some stage. It then just comes down to which one first. For me right now it will most likely be the sub in advance of a potential update next year (after which any new sub will be impossible to obtain).

Yes. It's debatable. The OP and many others dress casual to work. Therefore, a DJ and Sub are equally suitable. If you wear a suit, I say both are acceptable, but a dress watch on a leather strap is more appropriate.

I am a service engineer for a big medical device company here in Boston, and frequently travel around to hospitals around the world. I usually try to dress nice, but when I'm in the office it's business casual. I went with a white dial Datejust 41 with jubilee bracelet. To me, it seemed like a great mix if formal and casual, and I suspect the white dial will go with mostly anything.

You should have no issue with a Sub as a business professional. If that's what you want, go for it!

Either the sub or DJ41 would be perfect.

But...I wouldn't buy either without trying on the sub first.

I feel like you’ve got to get a read on the culture of where you’re working. When I was in corporate (fortune 100) I wore my 116710 every day. I was on the younger side for management and every once in awhile I would get comments about my “fancy watch.” I always brushed them off. I wouldn’t have worn my 116718 in that environment as it would have been much too flashy in the wrong way. I was working for someone else, and had direct reports I was responsible for so I had to keep that in mind. Not everyone in the work world views nice watches as a positive, some feel they’re flashy / frivolous (how dare they think such a thing!)

Right now I am working for a smaller fin tech and I only wear my 40mm breitling on a strap. I try to keep it as humble as possible in this environment.

If you work for yourself, wear whatever you’d like. Depending on industry, company, etc you may want to keep it humble / subtitle when interacting with customers. Just my $.02
