Guys if the watch was stolen I would 100% want it to go back to the original owner. I just would like to know if I would also be protected, no one wants to loose $8K and I wouldnt want to get into a lawsuit etc.. anyway I was just curious.

Who are you going to bring a lawsuit against? Your only recourse is whoever sold it to you and if they are already a crook, you're going to lose the 8k.

'Reputable' you said, take it back and give them a perfect chance for them to earn that title while you keep your safety as well.

You can‘t morally and legally claim ownership of a watch that has been stolen from someone else. |

In the United Kingdom, buy with a credit card. Within certain (generous enough to cover most second hand watch purchases) limits. The credit card issuer is jointly liable with the seller (and it is obviously an implied term of the sale contract that the seller can pass good title to the buyer).
