What happens if you truly want a watch that happens to be one these so called “hype” watches? You abandon the idea?

Got this pair from AD in 2018 and '19, what I wanted and very satisfied. I am waiting on a Coral Red OP41 but can be patient for my store to come through.

Neither of these two alternatives is particularly appealing to my sense of aesthetics.

I am a rather tall guy at 1.90m in height, and I have a solid stature, with wrists and hands to match. So on my wrist, I feel the Daytona with its dainty 38.5mm size, that’s visually reduced even further by its broad bezel and busy dial, looks out of proportion.

Instead of making me look sharp, as a fine timepiece should, it emphasizes the blunt mass of my limbs. It’s like squeezing into a 48 sized jacket when you should wear a 52. All it’ll do is make you look fat, desperate and clearly unfamiliar with any proper tailor. In my view, a watch should underscore the subtle and refined image I feel would match my personality, not make me look like a blunt big bloke so eager to show the world his status symbol that he’ll wear it whether or not it fits him.

So I have steered clear from the Daytona, even when it was offered to me at retail, in favor of larger watches more in tune with my stature.

But of course, everyone is free to do as they please and my view on this has no ambition of being authoritative in any way. Indeed the image I commented on is evidence enough that other folks see no impediment whatsoever in the proportion of a watch to the size of their wrist.
Sounds like you’re a mix between a fashion victim and someone who cares too much about the image he projects.

Most people wouldn’t care to comment or even think about the size of the watch you’re wearing, even if you were a 7-foot tall bodybuilder.

Anyone can wear a Daytona without looking ridiculous.

Unfortunately, that's a hard no for me. I suppose I could make it happen but I'm not willing to pay such a steep premium to make it happen and I know that once I got it, there would be another!

Oh wow “fashion victim”, what a description. If only you could see how I’m dressed most days. But maybe I’m the only one here who hasn’t deluded himself yet about the fact that a watch is but an accessory. I don’t have to contort into wearing a watch that doesn’t fit me just because popular preference is so religiously devoted to it. I prefer a watch that becomes my watch over time, rather than having to become the guy that goes with Paul Newman’s watch.

Seriously, it feels like these things are somehow objects of worship to some of you guys that one has to seek out, regardless of whether or not one actually has a use for them, just to fit in with the general reverence. And in the end, everyone has ticked the same boxes and ends up with the same boring lineup of GMTs, Daytonas and Submariners, religiously, if not slavishly following the path and tolerating no differing view.

Man, I’m sorry, this is just stupid. I wouldn’t wear a pair of Yeezys in the wrong size just to be seen in Yeezys, nor would I wear a Burberry coat when it’s not raining, just to show the world I got one. And most certainly, I wouldn’t wear an ill fitting Daytona just to have worn one. Call me a fashion victim as long as you want mate, but at least I haven’t fallen for the hype-cult you seem so servile and devoted to.

The Daytona looks ridiculously small on some people, that’s my view and I have every right to hold it.

So go back to your shrine and keep your analysis of my personality to yourself while you uncritically worship the great unobtainables under the crown.

Haha, touché :) Lawyers tend to as well in these parts, but then again, that’s a profession drawing quite a bit of revenue from car thieves, dealers and the football transfer market.

The watch is a perfect size. It's today's temporary giant watch fad that's off. What really baffles me is people turn around and insist the 39mm Explorer was 3mm too big??

Not yet. I'm still on the hunt for a SS Daytona and a blue dial Sky Dweller. Obviously, two of the hardest Rolex watches to get your hands on, but I refuse to pay over retail, so I'll wait it out.

I went Rolex crazy in 2020 and, since then, I have sold all of them except my Hulk. It is the only Rolex I need. I'm completely satisfied with it. Don't care for the hype/frenzy in Rolex anymore, and for the $$ I am far happier going back to my roots by looking at high-end manufacturers (far more interesting for the money).

TLDR: Completely content with Rolex, but not watches per se.

That’s a sound approach I try to follow as well. Just as you don’t need to have 4 modern BMW 3 series in different colors to rotate between for your commute. You need one, and then you have space in the garage for a few more exotic things to take out on Sunday afternoon.

Same with my watch collection. I have one Rolex to wear everyday (and a second I keep for sentimental purposes), and then I have a few finer pieces to take out for some fine dining and similar occasions here and there.
