Buy from a friend, or wait on AD ?

Not an AD, Kevin, a grey dealer. Isn’t that what the ADs sell them to the greys for? I think it’s worth calling one of the trusted sellers and asking how much they would pay for a brand new unworn mint dial fluted on oyster DJ. It couldn’t hurt to ask. If I were the OP, I’d try to negotiate the price down to What the guy paid, with tax, plus $500, for his trouble, just because I want that exact watch.

I would gladly pay $1k over retail for a watch I wanted.

They could check the serial if you ever brought it back for service. But most likely, they wouldn’t be able to tell if you just wear in the store so your theory works as well.

That is a very specific configuration. I doubt the seller would find a buyer very easy (at least for a $1000 premium) I would buy it for maybe a couple hundred dollars more then the guy bought it for, otherwise wait for the AD.

Then again I have no faith in AD's anyway. I feel they jerk most of us around with list and promises. I am not looking to wait years or even 1 year for the watch I want. I have purchased a number of Rolex from trusted dealers recommended by the Rolex Forums. Get exactly what I want within 24 hours!

Buy from AD. Screw your friend's friend who wants to get richer off your back.

Yes in person they won’t be able to tell but by serial number they will. Granted it’s not very likely but if there’s an inquiry about the watch or if its serviced somewhere else it’s easy to match serial to AD. if they find out somehow it’s not in the OP’s possession then it could ruin the relationship if they know he sold the new watch immediately or even worse that he’s trying to dupe them by maintaining he still has the watch when he doesn’t.

Chances are not high but it’s not a smart thing to do when relationships with ADs are important.

If I’ve ever moved an important piece I make sure it goes to a friend who won’t sell it anytime soon. ADs won’t care if it’s sold a few years down the road but an immediate flip is a no-no. If somebody wants to take the risk to make $20k on a steel Daytona so be it but I wouldn’t take the risk to break even (if that even is possible) on a Datejust.

Maybe I’m just overly cautious by nature but that’s my advice.

Yep exactly what I said earlier.

My guess is it’ll be below retail

I decided to buy from the "friend of friend".....

Ended up paying about $500 over what he paid, which i think is a pretty good deal.

What made my mind up was a trip to an AD in the NYC financial district yesterday.

I asked to put my name down for the Mint DJ and the SA bluntly said that "you wont get that, the mint is being discontinued".

How true that is, i dont know. But for the sake of $500, i thought its best to get it now than wait on ADs offering me other colors or for it to be discontinued.

I also took a trip to 47th st NY and asked a few dealers what they would give me for a mint DJ oyster. Between $12k to $13k was the range (more if i use it as a part ex), so even if an AD sources me one, im confident i can move it on.

Thanks for everyones advice.

Happy I went Green!

I would wait. Your AD seems to be making a good effort to keep you in mind, so I'd wait.

Hence you also have the intentions of purchasing more watches in the future, I would pass and wait for the AD.

I mention earlier in the thread, I registered for this watch at the AD that the seller bought from.

I’ll call it out - Bucherer at Bryant Park.

The seller had bought a Starbucks and a Sprite from the AD (sprite was flipped). The sales assistant knew he liked green so offered him this even though he wasn’t on the list for it, less than 3 months after the sprite purchase.

What rubs it in more is when I got the receipt it was the same sales assistant I registered with.

Goes to show that these sales assistants would rather sell to the same clients over and over - even if they are flippers.

You are helping him climb the ladder, so to speak. You are taking the watch off his hands so he has money for his next piece.
Would I pay him a premium? No.
Tell him that if does not take your offer, you are happy to help him and can put him onto the TS on the forum who will offer him thousands below msrp. Now is your offer a good deal? Yes.
I did not read the entire thread, I am too late. Wear it in good health.

47th Street Dealers…..if you think they will give you between $12-$13K for that watch, then I have a bridge for you. When you went in to the shops on 47th Street you did not have the watch in hand. Now that you do, take it in complete with box and papers and see what they say. I bet you a cup of coffee they offer below msrp

I think he’s just going to wear it.

OP, remember, if you need to remove links, to heat the side of the links where the threads are, before trying to unscrew them. Loctite has been applied. I used a Bic. You can also use a hairdryer on high heat.

Tried with both. For me, I just felt the jubilee with the fluted made it too dressy for my taste.

I felt the oyster helps to just tone it down, making it a little more sporty and wearable as a casual watch - especially on the 41.

I have a vintage 2 tone DJ 36 and this looks great on jubilee.

This friend of a friend has a good thing going with that SA, flipping his last two, but you didn’t overpay by too much so not the worst decision. I like the watch, have fun

I agree.

Got half a mind to go into the store and ask what the deal is.

Why are you prioritising flippers over real customers?

And this is Bucherer, who will I’m sure be getting priority over other ADs now they have been bought by Rolex.

Not sure if choosing violence is the best way to start this relationship ;)

Listed at $14k doesn't mean sold for $14k... It's all about what you want or what you are comfortable with spending or waiting.
