First, find the watch that you like the most, regardless of brand, and then see how, or if, it works into your financial plan.

I’d prefer a steel watch if I had one. Precious metal sure works well in a collection though!

With 45k, i would go a Sub, a DJ (stainless or TT) and a neo-vintage GMT like a 16710.

I can't think of any single watch that I'd want to wear for every single activity, occasion and situation any more than I'd want just one pair of really really nice shoes.

Should I sell all my pants for one really expensive pair of trousers?

One PM Rolex for me. I'd rather wear a DD36 (would have to be WG because you can't get into PT for 45 boxes of ziti) than three SS watches. To the people making a solid, justified & rational argument, from their opinion of which they're entitled, that I'd need to have a watch for more occasions (i.e.: travel/GMT2, beach/Sub or Exp1, daily/DJ36)... I'd rather not wear a watch on the beach than not have a PM Day-Date.

Sounds about right... I could probably swap all my watches for a platinum Daytona... But I would miss the various looks and functions of my current collection.

This is perhaps an unpopular and unsolicited opinion and perhaps one that comes from ignorance, but I don’t get the precious metal Rolex thing… Although I can kind of understand the appeal of the Day-Date and the Le Mans.

For me, it would be two steel Rolex pieces, assuming I could get them, which I can’t.

I’d probably do a root beer with some variety.
