I'm surprised some people claim that never happens to them, or that we should hang out with classier people. There are different ways people can ask how much the watch costs, not all of them are being wise-arses.
Since I've gotten my Rolex, several people/friends have complimented on my watch. Luckily, it has all been very positive and nothing sarcastic... but I still feel uncomfortable when they compliment and even ASK what KIND of watch it is, let alone how much it costs. For example, My wife and I were out to dinner with a few couples (very unpretentious people with not a lot of money) and one of the wives noticed my watch, and simply commented "That's a really cool watch, what kind is it?". I tried to end the conversation by just saying "Thanks" and not mentioning Rolex. She started looking closer at it and started drawing the attention of others. When I finally told her/them it was a Rolex, a few were surprised and said "Wow, how much does something like that cost?" with no mal intent, just simply very curious because they've never thought to buy a Rolex because it's not in their budget. I replied with "Let's just say a lot more than I would have liked to spend", and that was the end of it. But given this situation, I hang around a lot of people that don't exactly "have money" or can afford a Rolex, including my family. They don't know the cost of a Rolex because it has never crossed their minds to buy because it's never been an option for them, they just know Rolex = expensive. I just believe that not everyone asks that question in a backhanded way. Some people truly like the watches, and might just want to know how much they can get one for. |

I haven't had to say anything yet about the price but I'll say something like "retail price".
