Submariner - The original Submariner without a date function nor cyclops.

Submariner Date - Submariner with a date and accompanied by a cyclops on the crystal above the date aperture for magnification

Because to the majority of the traditional Sub-buying population (i.e. non-collectors), the Sub Date is the Sub. Most probably don't even know it's not the original.

My first Rolex in 79 was a Submariner date. No one said it was a Submariner Date back then, just a Submariner. I was unaware there was any other Submariner. On my watch, one of the highlights was the cyclops date magnifier which I had never seen on a watch before. No need to argue, it’s just me but to me, a true Submariner has a date…

Does it actually?

My ‘71 DateJust has no ‘quick adjusting function’.

You should quit while you are behind.

Well, you’re demonstrably wrong, but we’re in a post-truth world so you do you.

The DateJust had been around for more than 30 years before it finally got the quickset date (Cal.3035) in 1977. Most brands had quickset by then. Seiko, for example, since the early 1960s.

I said it was just for me dude??? Again for your clarification, just speaking for myself, no one else and if its correct for me, I then cannot be "demonstrably wrong"!

Yes indeed. I'm guilty of doing this sometimes, but if people would just do a quick Google search before quickly posting something off the cuff as fact, they could learn a thing or two while saving face at the same time!

Rolex themselves refer to the watches as "Submariner" and "Submariner Date." Enough said.

Depends on context of the conversation.
If you’re on a watch forum then submariner means sub no date.
If you’re out in public abs someone says “hey what kind of watch is that?” I would just say submariner even if it were a sub date.

Read the dial. One says Oyster Perpetual, one says Oyster Perpetual Date. They both say Submariner elsewhere on the dial.

Even though very specific people within the community are obsessed with referring to references by their exact designation by Rolex, the greater culture sees the Submariner as the model with the date.

The vast majority of Subs are date models; therefore, the distinguished model is the one without a date. So, people call the "Submariner" the No-Date.

It's as simple as that. It isn't going to change. Reminds me when people get butthurt when people refer to the Explorer as the "Explorer I." It's ok. We are all going to be ok...lol
