Do you care about dial legibility?

My favourite watch. It’s a converted clock I strap around my wrist. I still struggle telling the hour from the minute hand though. Looking for one with different colours.

Whats the point of having a watch that makes you squint whenever you want to read it. A quick glance should be all thats needed.

A lot of guys nowadays buy watches for decoration. Some of my friends even don't set the right time and funtions.
So it's depend on what you really care about.

Who cares if you like the watch I get it . My celebration is a bid hard to read, my arabic dial brown rose gold daytona, same….

just pay attention, enjoy the dial, read it and if takes longer to tell the time you are experiencing dial love—-connecting with tour dial — not a bad thing.

Sure does...the reason I kept passing on the BRLO Meteriorite is because I could not tell the time while looking at it, my eyes would have to zoom in. No bueno. Also another reason my 126622 only lasted a couple years with me. Everytime I looked for the time, it was not easy. The hands and the dial sort of lost themselves. A pity as that watch is very handsome.

Legibility’s important for me, I sold a couple of dress watches because of this.
No problems with my current Rolex collection.

Not really, each time I look at my watch to check the time I forget that I am looking at it to check the time, so it simply does not register. I have to say to myself « what time is it now?» for me to actually register the time.

I don’t care about looking longer at a beautiful dial to figure out the time

Love my Subs and Exp II Polar because they are so easy to read the time. My DJ41 has a white dial which helps a lot. My Panerai Radiomir is 42mm and easiest to read.

Extremely important. I've sold off a couple watches for that very reason. Nearly all my watches are very easy to read. This one more than any (the time, not the bezel LOL)

It is absolutely essential.

I can’t see the purpose of wearing a watch I cannot read at a glance.

If I can read the time easily in the dark even better.

Next in importance for me is height /thickness. Sleeve has to easily fit over the watch.

All covered exceptionally well with this 5522A reference.

And yet people act completely stupid over the meteorite BLRO...probably one of the worst dials in terms of legibility.

Folks prefer the hype over function.

It absolutely matters. This is one of the main reasons I chose the sub date over the GMT Pepsi. I think the bezel plays a part in legibility, as I constantly felt like I needed to see through all the noise on the Pepsi bezel, and then see the time. With the sub it was just automatic and extremely legible.

As long as I can see the hands I'm good. As several posts above I have a skeleton watch and that's by far the toughest one I have. Hand legibility is more important. Doesn't matter how good the dial is if you can't see the hands...

I'm a geologist working in the environmental field. I spend lots of time in the field running projects and I will make dozens of entries each day in my log book, and each entry includes the time. Legibility absolutely matters to me and that's one of the reasons I went with the Sub no date when I finally got my first Rolex. But if knowing the time easily was the ONLY thing that mattered, then the Timex Expedition I got to take on a fishing trip to the mountains in Mexico works just fine.

Of course it matters but it is not the most important factor.

40... If you get to 60, you'll really have eye struggle.

I do this, too. I set the watch, wear the watch, look at the watch, forget to read the watch, look at my phone a few minutes later.

It's matters a lot, it has to be visible enough to read.

Legibility to me is where the hands contrast enough with the dial so that the watch can be read in dim and low lighting. Dress watches with solid metal hands against glossy lacquer dials can be impossible to read in some lighting.

Watch legibility is vital to me and that's where good lume factors in where applicable
Taro Tanaka was the first to formalise and document the concept with the Seiko "Grammar of Design".
There's also the NASA design criterior for dial legibility with either a Black dial with with White hands or White dial with Black hands when evaluating watches for the Space program.
