My OysterQuartz (5.7 million) and its mechanical cousin Date Reference 1530 (4.1 million).

I love the 1530. I have a white dialed OQ now, but that's just temporary, 1530 is the dream.

Here's something you don't see in a movie everyday: Rolex 17000 in the trailer for the new movie "The Big Short" about the subprime mortgage crisis!

Check out 2:08.

Awesome. I just saw the movie last week. Tons of great wrist shots. I LOVE that bracelet on the OQ and 1530.

Wrist shot with my 1530

Not an OysterQuartz but the integral oyster case/bracelet design was the prerequisite to the 17000 OQ. Only 500 to 1,500 ref. 1530's were ever made and it was the first all steel Rolex oyster with solid centre links and a sapphire crystal. Very rare and unique given that it houses the calibre 1570 automatic movement (the only all steel oyster with an auto in an integrated design) which Rolex replaced in 1977 after just three years with the analog-quartz 5035 which ran until 2001.

I see a lot of Oysterquartz's on here (and forgive me if I missed a post on this one) but what about the original Rolex 5100?

The bracelet on this one is a thing of beauty!

I really like the look of these watches with a black dial. Something about them brings out the sharp lines of the case.

Can you still find a blue replacement dial for one of these watches today? I had previously owned the SS with a blue dial. Bought it in the mid 70's (I think) while on a layover at the Capt Cook hotel in Anchorage, AK. Would like to duplicate it again if possible.

Yes you can. Sometimes they pop up on eBay or the various watch forums. I had a new blue dial installed in place of my champagne original when it was in for its first factory service about 7 years ago. (see page 2)

Okay I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger on one of these. It's shown as a 17013A model, 1996 vintage. I cannot find anything that points to the "A" attached to the model number. Any thoughts?

You'd better double-check. I've heard of the 17013, and the 17013B. Never an A. I know that there were early models that were 14k instead of 18k gold. Check the fine engraving inside the clasp for the bracelet's gold content.

Looking at the photos one more time, and I see the 1703B on the two tone gold & SS bracelet. Would this be indicative of an 18K or 14K? It's being held out as a 1995 vintage so that would appear to be a later model? I don't have any photos that show the inside of the clasp. This is an EBay deal. I know,,,I know...

Most likely a B - 18K.

Well I'm looking high and low for one of these Quartz DJ, and I only see one here on the forum at this time. SS is okay but it needs something with a little more excitement for a dial. Ebay has lots of Quartz, but I;m pretty leery of buying from them. If anyone has a good idea, I'm all ears.

The watch I am looking at now is held out as a 1993 model and it is clearly stamped with the 1703A mark along with another stamp on the case showing 3498. Not sure what that represents. Very nice watch with case, box and tag although I know these can be purchased after the fact. It only has 12 links and I thought all of these had 13 links?

FWIW, the RSC in Dallas can replace the dials for $500.

If you make the deal and send it to Dallas for the dial swap, I would be wary of letting them refinish the case. They made a mess of mine.

Can you expand on that as I would have thought that kind of work would be pretty high on their skill sets? I'm still trying figure out the difference between the A and B model watches, if anything?

Does anyone have a feel for when the 17013A switched to the B model?

Had a 1530 number of years ago. Sort'a wish I still had it. I currently have the rare 19019 white gold d-d; a 17013 yg/ss date just; a 17014 wg/ss date just. Had the 17013 completely overhauled by RWSC Dallas some months ago. Traded the original dial, grey tapistrie, due to water damage. RWSC policy is if a dial is on a watch sent in for service has damage, they will only service if you agree to a dial replacement. Only white, gold, black and blue are available colors for OQ's. Price is $800.00 with trade. Total service cost was $1,550.00 USD. Literally like new!

$800 for a new dial? That's pretty steep.

Just joined the OQ family; got a great deal on a '99 serial 17000 with original boxes, papers and tag. Thinking of taking it to an RSC to refinish the case/bracelet.

Are these watches 36mm and does the case size change when it's gold?
