Yes, you can read the general time, but not accurately. Having lume on the five minute markers makes for a more accurate and easy-to-read dial in the dark, and sometimes even in the light.

There's also aesthetic and ethos-based considerations here. Having lume at 12 but nowhere else makes the dial look unbalanced. It's just stuck there, like the designers weren't sure what else they should do with it. It's also "half-assing" the sport element of the watch. It seems silly to put the flashy 3, 6 and 9 on the dial of a sports watch, while forsaking luminosity in the process. If you're going to lume a watch, lume it right. The diamond-dial DJ looks great without any lume, but it's a dress watch; it's not purported to be a sports watch. The Air-King is supposed to be a sports watch, but it comes off as confused. I either want great lume, or no lume. Mediocre, poorly thought-out lume calls attention to itself in a negative way, and it's one of the things that puts me off a design.

I'm sure they tried that. Rolex are cash rich and will in all likelyhood have tried many combinations and subtle differences before settling on the current model. Maybe the movement cost was prohibative for the entry level price they were aiming for. A shame as I love a GMT or dual time, as I find it useful, and that bloodhound dial looks better.

I imagine Rolex margins are quite heathy compared to other high end engineered luxury products.

I just tried this on at my Local AD. Great watch in person. Love the green and yellow, Masters colors. Don't love the 369 but that's not enough to put me off.

Same here. Mine arrived yesterday and I'm pretty sure I'll be enjoying it a lot - a very fun Rolex in their current line-up.
