Style preference.
I love the look of the new Explorer I and I love the Cartier Tank.

Hold onto the ones with meaning. Get rid of the rest if you like.

^^
this although I prefer the GMT but the Sub is more versatile

Same question here, most people would give up the other two.

I'm stuck with the idea that watches are somewhere hard to find, even though they are all massive production brands.

That Cartier has to go … it’s so tiny, how could you ever wear it?

I think the sensible choice is to either keep the Cartier & Sub or Explorer & GMT to give you the biggest variation between watches. Which combination is personal preference/ how often you wear them.

I can see why it’s difficult to pick - you could sell three and buy one to get you back to two watches. The Cartier doesn’t do it for me and the Exp is too small so I’d keep one out of GMT/ Sub, sell three and buy something else.

This is interesting. If you will keep the GMT, which watch would you pick as a complementary watch?

Tetragonum also appears bigger on the wrist. However, I resent that Carrier calls it "large size." Actually, it's not as small as you think. It's a good size, but not large for sure.

I’d think through what I want from the second watch and make it as different as possible to the GMT. Different colour - so white/ blue dial. Different strap - so leather. Simple hands only. Maybe non-Rolex to give something lower key when I don’t want to wear a Rolex for any reason.

Omega aqua terra seems a slightly obvious choice but would work. 220.12.41.21.02.001 for example.

Agreed with this reasoning. The Rolex are all variations on a theme. The Cartier is a classic that stands on its own.

This is the best response so far. If I "only" had 2 watches, I'd want both watches to be somewhat versatile but also different from each other. And yes, if one of them is a Rolex then I'd want something to be pretty obviously not a Rolex (unless you have something like a G-Shock you would be okay wearing in those situations). I'd also want the watch to be a strap monster or at least look good on leather.

The Omega is a great option.

I'd also consider staying in the Cartier family but maybe switching to a Santos. White dial, no-date, square face, obviously not a Rolex, almost two watches in one thanks to the strap change system. And it's pretty incognito on leather.

I loved and owned that watch before. However, the bezel is so easily scratched. I hope the carrier can go back to its original bezel design at some point.
