It's the perfect unisex size.

There is perhaps a psychological bias. A person wearing large watches will immediately consider it small until they wear it fo a while. Whereas someone who has worn 36 for a while may find it the more classic size.

I don't think many would question a DJ36 as inappropriate. I think it personally wears better as does my partner.

You should look into one of the old Tudor Jumbos. It’s basically a DJ in a 1019 Milgauss case, so the extra couple of millimeters make it larger without looking lollipop’y like the newer, larger watches. I loved my DJ and 76200, but this 90800 is in the Goldilocks area for me.

I have a 6.75" wrist. I tried on both DJs - 36 and 41. They both fit my wrist very well. I went on wait lists for both sizes. When I received "the call", it was for a DJ41, oyster bracelet, smooth bezel, black dial. I bought it and wear it daily. What I like about this configuration is you can dress it up or down easily. A one watch solution if there ever was one.

I tested both of the sizes myself when I was going to buy a DJ myself. Both sat good on my wrist, but as a lot of people has mentioned before it’s a bit of a personal opinion mixed with how you’re going to wear the watch. The 36 IMO is more of an elegant sleeper on the wrist “just being there” while the 41 really “IS THERE”. I have a fairly thin wrist also, so that might contribute to the big feeling of the 41… here’s how my 36 looks on my wrist:

Think the best suggestion is go and try. I'm very happy with 34mm.

Each to their own, but personally would pop for the 36mm every time. If not for the better proportions of the watch itself, but feel it suits majority of wrists better too.

Definitely not too small. If you usually wear a 41mm or bigger, it may take your eyes to adjust to the “smaller” size but 36mm is not small.

My wrist is 7.18” inch in circumference. Does the below look to small? Didn’t think so. Enough of this “big watch” hype.

In the end, get the size you like.

Agreed. I’ve been thinking about moving down a size from daily wearing a 41mm sub to either vintage or 36mm Explorer. My wrist is close to your size but man, something about 36mm just feels right.

Took me a long time to realise I had previouosly been chasing the wrong watch (blue DJ41, jubilee, fluted).

I think the key to understanding this is in the construction of the watch face. If it’s a smooth steel bezel, then the dial dimensions are likely to get emphasized. Which would mean you are effectively looking at ‘only the dial’. In that scenario the 36 might look a tad small for average 16 inch wrists. But if it’s a fluted or dual tone bezel, then the watch takes the entire face, and then the 36 starts to look perfect. The same logic could be applied to 41, which can start looking very large on some wrists.

Need to also watch for dial colours, blacks are likely to ‘shrink’ the dimensions to the eye, colours and white will ‘exaggerate’ the dimensions

I now certainly believe this. I tried the 36mm explorer on the two days ago, way too small for me. Noticeably small, i was a bit bummed. That would have been a fun piece to add. I think it would fit my wife very well, as she loves my BB58.

I wore DateJust 36’s for maybe 10 years before I bought a larger watch - a GMT. I even got into buying more of them to get different dials and bracelets. After picking up the GMT, however, the Datejusts just got less wrist time. Sure, I still wore them from time to time - but by the time I added a Sub and a Black Bay, the DJ’s became safe-dwellers. Sadly, that’s where they sit today. Serviced, polished, and ultimately will get traded in for something else eventually. The part I struggle with is the sentimentality…

Hey all! So i am looking to make the plunge and get myself a DJ which would be my first rolex. I went to my local AD the other day and they happened to have exhibition models to see and they had a 36 and 41 both fluted which is what i am looking for.

Originally i went in wanting a 41.. I put it on and was like hmm first though this is maybe to big.. then i put on the 36 and was like wow this isnt as small as i thought.. then i started staring at the dial and was like hmm this is maybe a bit to small..

I am all about blue dial on a jubilee with the fluted. SO i am just thinking... maybe the white dial is making it look to big? or maybe i am sort of leaning towards the 36 because its a darker dial and on the jubilee like i like it?

I cant decide :( As of now im on "the list" for the 41 but should maybe i should do 36 or is it even an option to be on the "list" for both? haha

What do you guys think?

36mm looks more elegant. 41mm looks sportier. You can pull it off any of these.

I particularly don't like fluted bezel on a oyster bracelet.

Since you're looking for a dressier look (jubilee/fluted combo), I would pick the 36mm.

36mm is classic and from the picture suits better to your wrist in my opinion.

I also believe in the next few years 36mm will gain popularity. Especially after justin biebers etc start showing DD36’s on their wrist, the masses will go after them :).

On your wrists I prefer the 36mm. I feel 41mm is just too big for a watch that is all dial.

I have a 34mm Tudor Prince Date and it is so comfortable and, for me, the perfect size.
