i am a vintage and modern rolex collecting maniac but mainly because my family has so much access to them. i also collect other swiss stuff like omegas. however, i am totally addicted to seiko divers both vintage and modern. i need to post some pics of them! i can't get enuff of them! one of my close friends is noah fuller of seiko fame so it's great to hang out in hong kong and chase down cool divers stuff!

I have lots of "cheaper" watches... I could honestly open a store and sell them I have so many! but I love them all so I guess Im stuck with them... for now. To answer a previous question about Sink-O's Luminox, those rectangles are the gas tubes that glow in any condition.. They are also on the hour, minute and second arms. I love my Luminox!

I have a TT Seiko Chrono when I'm in places where I'm not comfortable wearing my GMT II. Other than that, my Timex Ironman is a must for cycling and triathlons.

I like swatch watches

I have a skeleton one which is geeky cool, a james bond one from the villains collection a couple of years ago, I've got a mega cheap one on a funky leather strap and I also have one of those fossil watches with the digital seconds display on the face. I have to say the fossil is rubbish compared to the swatch collection - the skeleton one is even an automatic.

But I ususally wear my expensive watch all the time - a milgauss gv

I've got loads of cheapies, but now I also have a few Rolexes which 12 months ago I never would have believed.
Now in the process of selling some of the cheapies. Some of the cheapies though are very nice like the Luminox and the Seiko Monster, plus an O+W Mirage.
But then agan some Rolex could be classed as cheapies compared to some of the other manufacturers.

I wear these pretty much interchangably and am totally amazed by the time keeping of the 3 cheap ones. All of them are accurate to about a minute per week. Yeah, I know I should have used a Mont Blanc to pose them.

My latest cheap watch. 21 jewel skeletonized miyota movement with clear case back. Pretty accurate(about 10 s per day fast).
It's a "fun" watch that I'm wearing right now while I'm waiting to get my subc back from rolex service for engraving.

I'm not sure it's a great way to look at it - cheap versus expensive. I'd make a few points, feel free to disagree:

i) Rolexes might seem expensive to us, but in the real big boys' club five grand is decidedly cheap next to some of the $200,000 pieces some guys wear

ii) I love the Sub, and it's my favourite watch, but they're ten a penny. I see them everywhere. Wearing something a little more unusual has a novelty value. How often do you see a Marathon?

iii) Horses for courses. There isn't really an expensive version of a G-Shock, or an Ironman, or the Suunto sports watches. And why should there be? You'd probably look a bit of a tool doing a triathlon wearing a platinum DD. Likewise, I'm not going to wear a Rolex out mountain biking.

iv) I, like a lot of people, like some watches because they've got something special about them - they're unusual, pretty, cool, have an interesting history, or whatever. Often they happen not to be that expensive. My Luminox is cool and I love it. I don't like G-shocks, but I can see why others do, and the reality is that Rolex don't make anything like that. There are also some really cool watches like military issue, or pro-diver watches, that you can't buy from shops, and most people have never heard of, but are just too cool for school. None of them carry the premium that a brand watch does.

v) Variety is the spice of life. I don't like wearing the same shirt everyday, I don't see why I should wear the same watch. It's a lot easier trying something new for a couple of hundred quid that four or five thousand.

Just a few thoughts.

Oh, as a post-script, something which amused me a while ago: I was having a few drinks with some friends - all hedge fund/investment banker types, and all wearing Rolexes (I think it's an official uniform they have :P). I happened to be wearing a Sekonda I have that I'm very fond of. One of them noticed it, then they all started cooing over it, saying how nice it was. Funny thing is, that's quite common. Of all my watches, that's the one that catches people's eye and gets the completely genuine "Wow, that's really nice" type comments. It cost sixty quid. No one ever notices the sub...hehe

My treasured Tudor Prince Oysterdate (Ref # 74000, last series) & my other relatively expensive or rare watches (Movado, Frederique Constant, Poljot Sturmanskie, Omega, Tag Heuer) are only worn in specific occasions. This is specially frustrating for me.

An interesting fact:

The Mickey Mouse watch was Emperor's Hirohito favorite. He bought one when visited Disneyland in the 70's and worn it for the rest of his life. He was buried with the watch on his wrist.

Since early boyhood, Hirohito was a huge fan of Walt Disney. His first horse was called "Snow White". When he made a state visit to USA, that Disneyland tour was a personal request.
