Tudor "gateway drug" to rolex?

Inadvertently.

Whenever Tudor and “insert higher priced brand here” appear in the same thread title, the ones who feel compelled to justify their exorbitant purchases on a marginally improved product by disparaging others come out of the woodwork.

The cost of a watch isn’t a horologically significant aspect of the hobby but seems to be a common topic of discussion for many.

Just focus on the discussion at hand and keep moving forward.

I'd buy a Pelagos over almost any Rolex in the catalog if they all cost the same.

If I factored cost into the mix, I'd probably buy a Pelagos and a BB58

Spot on Matt...makes me cringe reading these types of comments.

I have both Rolex and Tudor, and ill argue you have no taste.
And for the Record, Rolex is not Haute Horlogerie at all. You wearing your Sub in Florida is as common as a Russian riding in a Lada.
ive heard loads of bull crap we shall say to keep things clean ! that Tudor is the poor mans rolex ! ive owned many rolex and Tudor over the years and I must say the quality in the new tudors are second to none and look and feel just as god as any rolex , the only upside I see to rolex is that its reputation is far superior than Tudor.
Watch for watch rolex is not worth 6 times the grey market price for a submariner than a black bay that can be had new at 20% off RRP not a chance !

Wow, I agree with most of what you say but I think the days of getting 20% off Tudors is long gone and especially so with most of the Black Bays..

No Tudor yet for me although LHD Pelagos has often been on my short list. My first watch was a quartz Raymond Weil watch that was a gift, which was followed by mechanical seikos, vintage and modern JLCs, and finally Rolex 126610LV as a daily wearer.

I had four Rolex watches bought from my AD, before I purchased my first Tudor and now I have four Tudor watches, three bought from my AD and another purchased used from a local seller, and from whom I also bought a used Rolex.

I'm wearing my BB36 right now and I can't stop marveling at what an excellent field watch it is. I always thought my Explorer (114270) was the perfect field watch, but the Tudor is right up there with it, neck and neck.

I'm not that big a fan of the styling of all the Tudor watches, but the ones I own (North Flag, THC, BB36, Big Rose), I absolutely love.

Bought the BB58 Blue in July and it hasn't left my wrist. I owned a 14060 for about three years and it got maybe a day a week. Tudor, both vintage and modern, is an incredible product. I have a healthy appreciation for both brands, but (for me) Rolex hasn't been the same since the 5 digit reference watches and Tudor just keeps getting better.

Exactly what I was going to say....

It's not that I can't afford a Rolex. I simply can't buy one.

I would buy a Sub or (preferably) a GMT tomorrow at list if I could. I can't so instead I'm going to get either of these two combos:

1. White Dial SMP300 and Blue Pelagos
or
2. Gray Dial SMP300 and Pelagos LHD

I seriously wobble back and forth by the hour

I love the Black Bay 58 because it is the closest you can get to a vintage late 50s Submariner in a brand new modern watch.

Tudor was originally created for people who could not afford a Rolex, but over time it has grown into its own brand.

Is it cheaper? Yes. Do I think this is on purpose by Rolex? Yes.

I am using "need" loosely here..

Tudor makes the watches that most "need". (E.g. make a great watch at a good price point). I also think Rolex experiments with Tudor just to see market reaction. Anytime they make even a small change to Rolex people go crazy like some canon was violated.

Rolex makes the watches that people can "want" but don't "need". (E.g. make a great watch at a luxury price point with extra bells and whistles.)

There is nothing wrong with that. Most on here can afford either.

I have a Rolex Explorer 1 because when someone says watch to me, that is the quintessential watch that pops into my head. I have to own one.

I have a BB58 because that, for me, is the "sportier" watch that meets my needs. Does a Submariner? Yes, but my "dive" watch is the watch that I will wear the least. Why waste that money on a Submariner for it to sit in the watch box most of the time? Up until the BB58, my options were limited in that size and quality. In the end, by making the BB58 Rolex got more of my money anyway.

I cannot tell you how many watches I have bought from all brands just to get to the point where I now know what I truly like.

I remember when a Rolex Sub was affordable to a wider spectrum of consumers. Sill expensive, but more attainable then compared to todays standard. Could it be possible that Tudor is scratching the itch for a broader consumer base? Like many of you, I love/respect all high quality watches, especially Rolex, but i have to tell ya, the BB58 reminds me what Rolex used to be, but better. For me, I discovered Tudor after owning Rolex.

Rolex has allocated huge amount of resources on promoting Tudor brand for the past 5 years. Tudor used to be on par with Longines. Now it is clearly moving to next stage. I reckon Tudor’s sport watches are now competing for the market segment used to be dominated by Omega, Panarai, IWC etc.

I started with Rolex, but started branching out with Tudor when the Pelagos came out and caught my eye. Then came the introduction of the Harrods, the BBGMT, and...well, let's just say it wasn't long before my collection had a nice complement of Tudor.

After several years of collecting, buying, selling, and flipping...one truth has emerged. When I find a watch I love, it's not the brand on the dial that's the most important thing.

One nice thing about owning a Rolex is that it liberates you, in a sense, to explore other brands. Once you’ve already checked the Rolex box, you don’t need to worry about looking like someone who “cannot afford a Rolex” or whatever since you already have one, and the strong itch to get that first Rolex has already been scratched. I got a Rolex before a got a Tudor, but I’ve enjoyed exploring a few microbrands in between.

Edit to add, as others have said, that Tudor is its own brand that offers different--sometimes better--products from its big sister. Whoever said that "Tudor is what Rolex used to be" also makes a great point.

And i think you're spot on with this, that's why I went with a BB58 after acquiring my Rolex's. I wanted a watch that had a pre ceramic, vintage feel to it, without having to worry about the headaches that come with buying a vintage watch.

No Tudors so far...

I like the look of Tudor GMTs and Black Bays, but I wonder about an aluminum bezel. Having said that, I might wind up with a BB41 with blue bezel and blue fabric strap. Looks smashing.

I had literally never even heard of Tudor before getting into Rolex. Now I love Tudor, have picked up a couple Omegas, and am considering adding another brand into my collection. Rolex has definitely been the gateway drug for me into the Swiss watch wis world

As my prior comment was too explicit I'll try it again with out being offensive (if possible). For me Rolex is the real addictive watch; Tudor is what I used to try to get by when I can't get the real thing or don't want to pay for the real thing.
