Nah, I guess I'll send it to Sotheby's when I'm ready.

The listing mentions a tropical brown dial. Am I missing something?

A Vietnam era watch bought in Hong Kong with some crude engravings on the case is not going to entice me to pay more than an equivalent watch without the engraving. That scroll could have been the result of a lost weekend in Vagas with some army buds and as provenance goes is pretty thin, it doesn't add value in my world.
Still a cool watch though and I love the dial in the OPs pix which show off it's tropical colouring beautifully. |

Agree with Dan S and Springer.
It was common to deface items with a service number, or last 4 in that era. To a lesser degree, it still is. Difference now is the SOF community (and conventional units) understand the loss of value when doing so. None of the post-9/11 SOF guys I served with took their Rolex. Only exceptions were senior field grade officers, General Officers and Senior NCOs who never left the wire. Randall Made knives-yes! I had Randall engrave my Model 14, but would never engrave my 5513 or 16750. My single vote is for no added value. None. DOL Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Just making sure - you mean that you own the watch being auctioned? Meaning that the SGT (whose name is in the Sothebys description) is not the owner? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Vietnam War Rolex GMT-Master 1675
Good luck on the auction.
My only quibble is why you (or someone) sourced an older, partly faded Pepsi insert and installed it to make it look original? Sothebys is presenting it incorrectly methinks? Here is how it looked in 2018 when sold for 10k with a service insert. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Why did he engrave both sides of the case?
Makes no sense, but cool watch if only for the story, which is a bit light in detail IMO. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Anyone know which auction it was getting sold at? Curious if it reaches the estimate.
Was this the link? Lot no longer available. It was Sothebys. https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auct...s-steel-dual-2 |

It's clear he was promoting the auction listing on this thread, but what happened after that? Wouldn't Sothebys have had the watch in their hands?

That is the most pretentious scribbling I’ve ever read on a watch site. He refers to the watch in the second person!

Did they replace the hands? The ones in thewatchguy link looks much cleaner than the image posted above in this thread.

you have to think about this...he was in a war, he put his info on the Rolex, not because he was afraid his fellow soldiers would steal it, they would not do that! He did that in case he got killed or captured and the enemy got it off him. And maybe one day his family would be able to retrieve it, he got that Rolex to help him keep time for many important things....it was a lifeline to keep in check, not some luxury watch like you would wear to dinner or stare at while you watch your tv or movie and wipe clean when you got a smudge on it because you scratched it in your cubicle at work...

Ten years from now, that will probably look like an absolute steal for a long E 1675.
I remember being amazed at 50k Paul Newman Daytona prices years ago, and I was incredulous when MilSubs also reached that "crazy high" price level... Now I wish I'd bought 10 of each at those prices. |
