Something tells me he wanted to strike up a conversation with you and it's all he could come up with to sound like he's someone special. But as someone from Spring, TX, very familiar with the Woodlands, he could've just been being a douche.

It comes and goes. There times when people LOVE Rolex and want to tell you about theirs and how they really want to get one some day. Then there are other time periods where people will tell you that its too flashy, not worth the money all that. Right now seems to be the time period where people are feeling the screw Rolex hype. I have heard it more than a few times from people that go Omega, Tag, Tudor (this doesnt make sense to me), or Breitling. Oh well I just see it the same as iPhone vs Android debate.

The Audi comment was perfect, as it was basically symmetrical to the original comment. No offense intended, no offense taken, right?

sorry to hear about the experience. Rolex community is imo very diverse, you get both collectors and posers wearing the same models. I am guilty of grouping up wearers to various levels of horological passion according to which rolex model they wear as well.

I tried going into a watch-talk with rolex wearers and some are just flat in what they know and conversation has to end prematurely whenever that happens.

I used to own a pam and during its heydays, you can start a conversation on what they are wearing and it likely ends up with a warm handshake or a pat on the back of sorts.. but i dont really get such with rolex wearers unfortunately.

Yep, same. I feel like i have been hearing it for years. Oh is that a Rolex? That’s crazy, i would never spend the money on that. Goes out to their $90,000 SUV lol. We all have our things.

Yes, and surely you knew i was joking at the time.

GOAT, only a total dumb ^&*%$ would get a Bentley (or Maserati) knowing the massive defects and ongoing problematic costs to keep them going.

So, about the excellent Mazda CX-50, when is delivery? ;)

Again, i kid i kid, the Genesis is a very fine vehicle.

I'm sure a comment like that would catch me off guard but I'm sure to ask him why he's so concerned about what I'm wearing. He has no idea if it was a gift, or if it's my grail, or if it's one of many in my collection. Definitely wouldn't waste my time explaining my position, seems like a real creep.

The most effective way to do that would be to just ingore it completely

But I suppose that approach wouldn’t help a bruised ego

Not necessarily. Ignoring it completely is a sign of fear or weakness, or perhaps just not being witty enough to have a humorous come back.

Imho ignoring is the best and shows great strength in restraint. Better still to say nothing, and then smile like a Cheshire Cat as you walk away.

Humor varies, and some lack it. Smile like a Chesire Cat

What strangers may or may not think about you is nothing to get riled up over

I highly recommend checking out the book “Ego is your enemy” by Ryan Holliday

Here is where I disagree. 1) it has nothing to do with a bruised ego like you keep insinuating. 2) There is nothing morally wrong with responding in kind. Nothing at all. Highly successful people often have sharp tongues and clever responses.

By the way, it’s noteworthy that you’re not following your own advice. Bruised ego?

He may be trying to say sometimes you have to pick your battles. Because arguing with idiots is more of an intelligence test for yourself in how much effort is it really worth expending. I am all for throwing down if the situation calls for it but this isn’t it. IMO.

I suppose it’s up to the individual as we all respond differently to external inputs.

I know for me in this case, I would’ve tried to ignore it. More often than not, people as described in the OP, are attention seekers or maybe just unhappy.

Either way, they aren’t worth expending a lot of effort IMO.

I was hoping you would catch that lol

But I did want to take the opportunity to recommend that book. It is really good. It actually has quite a few examples in there of how people became highly successful in their fields by ignoring their ego

I am a work in progress myself. I still get frustrated sometimes when people cut me off in traffic for example, but I’ve become much better at just letting it go

That is true. Choose your battles.

But I disagree that it’s somehow wrong or not ethical to respond in kind. Of course it’s okay to respond. The funnier the response, the better…

Yes. I might give that book a shot.

I often go out with a bunch of alpha males. Rough crowd. Everything is fare game and there is no shortage of opportunities to practice good come back lines. I have just learned to dish it out with the best of them. Of course, in a professional environment, I’d never behave that way.

But maybe that’s where I get my perspective from.
