I'm in the market for one as well.
I really like that they now have the inner bezel engraved and was told that it might have to be special ordered, does anyone have an idea if it's possible? Also, how long would such an order take?

Based on all the pictures I have seen, my own experience, and to my knowledge, the white dial of the Explorer II has not and does not fade to a yellow over time.

There was a small period during the mid-1980s when Rolex intended to produce a white dial Explorer II but due to some fault in the paint that they used, the dial came out to be a creamy/ivory dial instead. These Explorer II's ref. 16550 were known as the "cream dial" Explorer II and were produced in small numbers. They are quite rare, very collectible, and have very high resale value today.

At about 1988, Rolex began production of the Explorer II ref. 16570 which is the model currently seen today. They have been produced with the option of a white dial ever since and all models that I have seen have remained snow white throughout all those years. Absolutely no fading whatsoever.

Here's a link with some information about the cream dial model:

Jbomb42, buying an explorer 2 is a good decision. Its one of the most comfortable sports watch Rolex has ever made. Its also one of the lightest at 127 grams :)

Cant argue against that. I think the Explorer II, and the Explorer line in general, is a good first watch to learn more about what the brand has to offer. A lot of people will associate the Sub with Rolex but the Explorer is a good first watch because it shows the wearer that the brand has much more to offer than just their legendary Sub.

Its also a pretty simple watch in general. No rotating bezel to fiddle around with, classic but simple design, just set the watch and wear it.

So what is a fair price for a white dial Explorer II from an AD? I am interested in one and my AD has one.

A fair price I believe would be 10% off the MSRP with no sales tax. I'm sure you can get that price on the Explorer II.

Hi guys, great chat on here. I have both the Explorer II, black face and the Sub non date. Cant go wrong with either of them. Hard to pick a favourite one as both of them are iconic. The sub is the most popular and rugged of the two but the explorer is less seen so has the 'coolness' about it.

JJ solid report I like it. My AD said the EXP is due for a change over by Rolex. I told her stop making guesses. She said next year at the show look for a change. I bet her $5,000 or a DJ Rolex she is up in the night wrong. She and her manager took the bet. Looks like another Rolex for me in March 2009.

The white dial is definitely more popular. Hold them both side by side and see which one you like more!!!
