It’s my favorite watch. Honestly. Took me 2 years to find it just like I wanted it. Worth the wait.

Logical, thoughtful move. Great work.
Some days I wish I was a collector, but it does nothing for me. I just need one: a BLRO or a black dial Daytona, when I eventually get the call from my AD, I'll be set. |

People here act as if it's against some religion to stell a Rolex but taste change/ Besides changing taste people want to upgrade in life and not status quo so selling a Rolex to buy a Patek is a nice upgrade.

There is such a thing as too many watches, because unless you're Flava Flav, you can't wear them all at once.
While I acknowledge their artistry, I think most Patek's are ugly watches. However, I looked up your reference and that one is a real looker. I could see myself wearing that one. |

Great post and I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of it. Our tastes undoubtedly change and you, we, have ever right to move on a watch that just doesn't get the wrist time it might get with a new owner whilst freeing up funds at the same time.
I think the reason we don't see any "Outgoing" posts is I suppose, the fear of the ridicule of some of the old school on here of just being accused of being a flipper and adding to the inflated prices. Whereas in reality most of us love this hobby and collecting watches but see a new model or learn about a different brand and do what's necessary to achieve it. I'll be the first to congratulate an 'outgoing' poster in order to trade up to a better watch, or even if he's just hit hard times. Speculators, that's a different matter.

I know Swaye very well indeed and when he says that Rootbeer/Clint Eastwood is his favourite watch, he is being deadly serious.
Coming from a man who has got some serious FP Journe's in his collection and chose to move on his Day Date Ice Blue Platinum with Diamond baguettes and keep his Rootbeer, that is one hell of a compliment for his vintage GMT. Then again Mark is a one off who doesn't care what everyone else thinks and is a true WIS and fantastic watch nerd.

I don't see you selling your old suits for profit. Either they are crap quality and you will get nothing, or they are bespoke and again, the odds of finding a buyer are limited and no one will pay good money for a second hand bespoke when part of the fun is the tailor ping experience.

When I've sold my Rolexes in the past there was no sadness, as the chase to own one was always more thrilling than any sentimental disappointment of selling.

good timing
I went all money market in all of my investments in December Rolex are not rate and dime a dozen, i'm sure you can replace them in future (and probably for less). |

Agree with others. Less is more. I recently slimmed down my collection and am glad I did. I've kept the pieces I really love and whenever I open up the watch roll I'm filled with joy and not being overwhelmed by having too much on my hands. With some watches, I really dread letting them go, but once they're gone I remember them fondly and don't really ever regret it. But we all have our own collecting philosophy, so whatever makes you happy I suppose!

Great post OP. Would love to see the breakdown of each watch you sold to know the profitability ratio of the $20k.

Yeah, seriously no point in having a bloated collection unless you truly want to categorize yourself as a collector.
I have 3 watches: GMT, Milgauss, and a G-Shock. The GMT is my favorite and the G-Shock is my workout beater. The next watch I want is either a GS or a Day-Date 36mm Yellow Gold. Not really desperate to get another watch. At this point in my life, having 2 Rolex is beyond a blessing. If I do add to my collection eventually, I'll evaluate my collection. If I find myself not wearing a watch, then I'm putting it on the chopping block. I've considered unloading the Milgauss but it's such a unique piece it's hard to part with and on top of that this is not the time to sell. That watch will bubble in time and I don't need the cash right now so I'll hold it. In fact, this post is making me really want to wear it again so it'll be going on my wrist for the next couple of weeks. Trust me, you appreciate what you have so much more with a smaller collection. Once your collection starts getting out of hand, you've really turned into an addictive purchaser rather than simply a watch lover. The habit is in every hobby out there. |

I agree that a smaller more rounded collection has helped me a lot. I still have a few (Panerai) to go but, they're in the doghouse price wise so I will wait
