I think most right now in a poll would go 41 if had a choice. I wonder though in the far future as probably the last generation of 40 subs would this series be more sought after. I think humans like to go for what’s different and if everywhere u go is 41 subs I see the nostalgic appeal of the 40. Now since I’m predicting thw future time to go pick stocks

Well written article on the 41. I personally also did find it a “bigger” watch although better proportioned. That bracelet difference is real. As stated in the article if u like other brands like panerai u probably want the maxi case

I think the bigger lugs make the 40 look more like a tool watch.

If u can get new from AD then the choice is obvious
Yeah, it has a lot to do with the angle at which you're viewing the watch. I've seen pictures of a Sub on TRF, and I had no way of knowing if it was a 40 or 41 without looking for the crown at 6:00. In other cases, it was obvious to me whether it was a 40 or 41. You could just tell immediately...

Still, in some cases, I've seen a 41 that looked really squarish, and ironically, that's a popular complaint for some when it comes to the 40, but yet if you see the 41 at the wrong angle, it's just as "squarish" as the 40 is.

I would go for 41.
Either 40 5 digits or 41.

I have several 5 digit subs, and a 11 series ceramic. I took both versions to the AD last seek to compare to the new 41. New 41 does indeed look more proportioned, and subtly larger than the 11 series ceramic (noticeably larger than the 5 digits). I like the 41 look, and feel the larger bracelet will position the watch a bit better (more consistent) on my wrist (maybe 6.75"). AD will get me one, as I am a very good customer of the store overall (3 rolexes and multiple jewelry purchases for the wife over the years). We'll see what that means over the next few months

It also gets a lot of hate for essentially the same reason.

Thank you for posting this article great read and I agree with it. The 40 definitely feels lighter on the wrist but I’m sold on the 41 after trying both on.

IMHO, you are splitting hairs here. While some say they prefer the 41mm, lets remember how many 40mm references are out there and simply loved. I have a 40mm gold sub and a 40mm ss gmt and that is a great size for me. I also have a 41mm DJII which I guess some people did not like because of the case profile but I fond that comfortable also. Id say try on both if possible and make a decision. Plus, do you want one now or possibly years from now as prices increase. You could also purchase a preowned, either a 40mm or 41 mm and then sell it in the future if you get the AD call.

I was on the hulk list (no dice) and green bezel since…AD called last fall with a 41 sub date. I have a couple older subs and a sd4k… almost passed it up and so glad I did not. Basically it’s become my everyday and I love it. I was worried would be too big. I was wrong and it’s just perfect IMO.

I have recently tried 41 and 40. Both are amazing but I like 40 more. Once you notive the larger bracelet and clasp, it is hard to un-notice it.

The unpolished 5 digits is definitely a keeper! So much more charm and perfect case proportions

I own both. Looking at pictures, looking at them side by side in my watch box … I prefer the 41mm / think it looks best.

On the wrist … I don’t notice much difference.

I recently tried on the 41mm although the bracelet was a bit tight for my wrist it felt great. It's watch perfection in my eyes.

I recently had the chance to try on a 40M sub and was surprised at how much lighter it felt vs. the 41M.

Here is my personal pros / cons but hoping the forum adds things I've missed.

41 Pros:
- AR coating
-Slimmed down profile
- Larger dial allowing the date function to breathe

40 Pros:
- lighter
- smaller clasp
- 31 series movement
- Available now at a lower price point

41 Cons:
- 32 series movement
- Size / weight of watch in comparison
- Wait time

40 Cons:
- Lack of AR coating
- Older model
- Limited warranty

I think if all things were even, I would go with the 31 movement series for simply piece of mind. The availability of the 40M version is also a big appeal, but I did feel the date function and dial real estate was visually smaller than the 41.

The movement topic is contentious, I know, but that risk should be build in to this purchase IMO. I'd hate to get a 41 watch and pay additional servicing costs or lose the watch for long periods of time.
I believe if you want an AR crystal on your 40 a replacement crystal would have it.
