I got this as a graduation present in 1972. It was my everyday watch from then until I stumbled on a new Daytona in 1997. I'm embarrassed for the condition it's in in comparison to so many of the beautiful red subs in this thread, but thanks to this forum, it's in Bob Ridley's hands as we speak. I can feel my wallet puckering (I also sent him the Daytona), but I'm excited to see what he does with it.

Mark IV face, serial number 2811xxx Hmac, THanks for sharing. I think it is awesome that you have had your hands on this beauty since Day 1. And even as is, she is stunning! |

I'm in a little bit of a quandary about what to tell Bob Ridley when he calls after getting a look at it. I'm still not really a collector. I would like to keep it as an heirloom rather than an investment piece so I have some desire for it to have a new-ish appearance. I guess I'm trying to strike some kind of balance between refurbishing and maintaining its value. In that regard, it appears that my decisions are going to revolve around the bezel, the crystal, and polishing. *sigh* First world problems....:) |

If I can be of any further help, please let me know. However, let me say this...by changing out or polishing the crystal won't change the value. Putting a pearl in the bezel insert will not change the value. And servicing or replacing a part of the movement does not change the value.
What does change the value at a service is -heavy polishing of the case - not having the original insert - replacing the original hands and dial For fun, do you have any pics of you and the watch when you received it back in 72? That would be cool. Hope that helps Bri |

I do have pictures from way back then, but nothing of sufficient crispness or focus in that pre-digital, film pocket camera era that would resolve what kind of watch it is. This photo was 1973. |

I recently ran into a gentleman wearing this 1680 red sub, he said his father bought it for him in 68, his dad dad told him to pick out any one he wanted. He had no idea of the value of his watch, he said it cost $275 bucks, he also has the original box. He handed it to me, and let me check it out. Anyone know a little more about this dial, bezel insert? He said he's on his second band. It's a shame someone polished it so much. What would be a decent price to offer?.

the bracelet is completely shot and needs to be replaced. I would not wear it on that one any more! Looks like a service insert. Needs a new plexi as well, and probably a service.

Forgot about this thread! Picked this one up last year for a great deal. Was worn hard by the prior owner but case seems sharp and she keeps amazing time. Some dust under the crystal tells me that was changed. I've picked up a correct NOS tropic that's lying in wait.
Has a clasp dating from 1970, still has the non triplock crown. In any case, she needs a cleaning, seals, spa treatment and lume stabilization when I move back to the USA at some point. Therefore, she gets very little wrist time. SN: 2.500 Thanks!
