Funnily enough to me this is a great selling point for the Lange (and most other less widely known brands).

I have never tried on a Cellini, but would out of curiosity (I do not think an AD has ever even offered to show me one).

The Omega looks like a great choice - congratulations!

For others still considering - for the money I think you can get a lot from JLC in terms of dress watches.

There are so many great brands for a dress watch...

-ALS
-JLC
-Breguet
-Blancpain
-Glashutte
-Chopard
-IWC, etc.

I recently rounded out my steel / TT sports watches and the next one will be a classic dress. I keep coming back to Breguet. i think you get a lot for PM models both from an aesthetic and engineering perspective. Their hand-finished, solid gold guilloche dials are stunning IMHO. The 10hz Classique Chronometrie is an amazing timepiece.

39mm or below
No date
Precious metal

I've tried on the Cellini and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately I've not seen the Lange in person yet. I won't purchase one until I've tried on both.

Which do you think pairs better with the Explorer? If anyone owns these watches, can you comment on what you like or dislike about them?

They both have an MSRP of around $15,000 in the US. If anyone has some real world advice on the best place to purchase and pricing information, I'd really appreciate it. I'm guessing either of these can be had at a decent discount because they are not steel sports watches.

As always, pictures and thoughtful advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Mike

Curious on the decision to slim down the stable? Did you sell off all the other pieces?

I respect you for pairing down the collection to just two. I have often thought of doing the same, but haven’t been able to part with them just get. Do you miss any of them in particular?

If it’s down to just those two, for me personally I like the look of the Rolex more. The ALS that you’re looking at is just a bit too simple for my liking. So many other watches that look almost exactly the same with just a different name on the dial. Some of the others in the ALS lineup with more complications are absolute stunners and blow the Cellini out of the water. I would absolutely go in that direction if I were choosing. Also, I like how ALS is more of a WIS brand.

Good luck with the decision friend!

I had a cellini dual time. Sold it since as I got the call for a nautilus and I’m now looking for the saxonia thin in white gold. I loved the Cellini when I had it though, but one had to go.

Update for all:

1. Went looking for Cellini in December.
2. Stumbled onto this thread and going into Lange, visited AD and <3 Lange 1
3. Ended up ordering a DJ36 in Feb, for pickup next month.
4. Continued search for OF WG Daytona/Lange 1 - ended up Lange 1

Picking up tomorrow a new Lange 1 Rose Gold, Moonphase. With a strap change, luminous hands, moonphase, day/night indicator (see pics below, one is sky blue daytime and the other is starry nightime), numbered small seconds, open triangles on the power reserve indicator and open square above the indices on the main dial, it seems less formal than the Lange 1 with no moonphase.

Cellini or Lange Saxonia?

Big congrats on your Lange 1 moon!

The AM/PM disk behind the moon disk is one of the most incredibly neat features I've seen in a watch.

I just want to chime in and say you are one cool dude, OP.
Less is more

I’ll vote Cellini only due to robustness and ease of service.

I'm with the majority on this one too. I don't think anybody implied the Cellini is a bad watch/movement, but Lange is on a different league altogether. I would have had no doubt if in your position.

By the way, that is an amazing watch you got yourself. Enjoy it in good health for many many years to come!

I have both and love both. The Lange gets a lot more wrist time than the Cellini

Don’t have a dog in this fight but I think that the Germany Fighting Hund would win against the Swiss Mountain Dog in my eyes. However a Cellini Moonphase in WG, if they did that, would put up a good showing. Thank you all for great photos, technical info and a great read. No Grey, availability, AD moaning = proper TRF thread!

Thanks Keith! I'd argue if I could. I'm really enjoying the Explorer and after a long delay, my new dress watch will arrive tomorrow. Pictures to follow.

Lange all day, every day. Yes, the dial is rather sparse (very German) but the back is where the real show is. Their movement finishing is second to none. This would be an easy choice for me.

Congrats! I have the same model of GS and absolutely love the size. In this case because of the smaller diameter, i do appreciate the thickness (that oft comes with all GS models) that contributes to its wrist presence.

Thanks Longhorn! I love the thickness. It's 11.3mm which sounds thick, but a lot of that thickness is from the vintage inspired box sapphire crystal. It by no means feels thick like a sports watch; but it doesn't feel overly delicate either. How often do you wear yours?

Congrats on being able to make this tough decision.

Personally, I would go Lange. Cellini is good but it's not Rolex doing what it does best.
