I never understood what makes the difference between a Smurf and a Cookie Monster/Blueberry besides the dial.

The nicknames are useful as shorthand, but I agree it does get a little silly how people try to force a name on every new model variant as soon as they are announced.

Have to agree regarding the reference numbers well they have not changed since the 1980s excerpt for adding a 1 to the first digit and now since the 32 movement its now a 2 to first digit. Its not hard to learn most references of say the popular sports models. But now perhaps they should rename TRF, to the silly childlike nickname forum for those in the kindergarten group.

They added more digits to the reference numbers and it’s too long to say even if you remember. It’s just short hand. Nothing to do with right or wrong imo

While some nicknames are iconic (e.g. Pepsi and Coke), the proliferation of pet names for every model that comes out is silly. People act as if you’re a cool kid if you know all the pet names, when it would be more appropriate for watch enthusiasts to know the reference numbering system.

I think it’s the people who insist on only using reference numbers as thinking they are the cool kids.
Ultimately why does anyone care that much to get upset about what someone else calls a Watch anyway.

I prefer Daytona, ceramic sub, etc. instead of the reference numbers and nicknames.

It all depends on in which context being used. May work for some, not for others.

I love nicknames and think thats what gives a particular watch some charm of personality. Much better than 155005677899CFSADVBBBNJGG-550BVA etc

Pro nicknames. And the people getting so bent over them sound like “get off my lawn” type folks. Let people use what they enjoy and don’t take it so seriously. They’re just watches.

I do not particularly like the nicknames, but they are much easier to remeber than a 6 digit number - at least for me.

I used to like the nicknames when they were consistent. Only 1 Pepsi, only 1 Coke. It’s just the bezel color. Suddenly Batman has a different name when you change the bracelet. Even worse, one watch can have many names. How can the green ceramic Sub be Starbucks, Kermit & the non-existent word Cermit? So now I hate nicknames. If you can’t agree to the nickname, then it’s just a pet name you call your watch. If that is the case, please keep it to yourself.
