Rehaut is a French word that means flange. So, it is the flange under the crystal that separates it from the dial, or keeps them from smashing together.

Lately it has become a place for Rolex to do some advertising and where they now put the serial numbers.

Prior to 2003-ish they had holes on the side of the lugs were the bracelet attaches to. Later models the holes were solid.

Google holes vs no holes Rolex. Plenty of pics

The current definition runs:

Rehaut = French for flange. The engraved ring/flange under the crystal.

As you rightly say, "lately" it has become a place...

So not all rehauts are engraved.

In my opinion the definition would be better as something like:

Rehaut = French for flange. The ring/flange that is under the crystal and which is engraved in modern references.
