My 1963 GMT 1675 with Silver Dial?

Sorry for the late reply gentlemen. I spoke to the Rolex Heritage department last December i think and was informed that the watch is still under inspection. I was told there is no need to call and to just wait for their email once they have completed the evaluation. Its been almost a year and maybe they are having a hard time evaluating and disproving its authenticity. Nevertheless, i do believe that the watch including the controvertial dial is an original and authentic Rolex. I will be in Geneva this July so i plan to drop by and request for an update. Btw i asked Xeramic for advise and he said the longer it takes them the better. Hopefully there will be good news this year.

I understand there’s big money on the line hangng in the balance plus the historical meaning, but gee whiz they should just give you a nice loaner watch in the meantime.

How on earth does it take a year? Anybody with the expertise to authenticate it would be able to do so immediately.

love that..true indeed perhaps a nice Jean Claude Killy, but that would be like giving Lionel Richie a 'loaner'. He's kept every car he ever bought in his collection...which is upwards of 300 !!

You are right about that. Hard to understand really what is taking them so long to authenticate it. In fact the technician who did the initial inspection told me everything looks original except that they don’t have a silver dial on their data base. Anyway, it took the heritage department a year before i got an email accepting my 6542 GMT with red writing for restoration. Maybe in a couple of months i will finally get an official reply.

'The longer the better' seems apt here; I am curious how they approach you if it is indeed a one of a kind piece. Good luck!

It will be business like as usual and just inform me that they will do the movement overhaul i requested. The acceptance for repair or restoration is their way of saying your watch is authentic. Not like Omega or Patek where they issue an extract of archive.

Thank you for this wonderful thread sir.

I think it is an interesting coincidence that about one year after you have handed the watch to Rolex, the Tudor opaline dial GMT is released. The mythical Albino Pan Am dial and its known specimens appear to have a matte white finish, while yours is silvery just like the opaline GMT.

I too hope this watch is the real deal.

The Tudor GMT with opaline dial looks really nice. Would have been nicer if they just did a reissue of the 6542 GMT with opaline dial.

My source at Tudor HQ Gen, says he thinks this white gmt will be the last chunky 42mm piece, as the big watch craze is over !

39mm sub 58s (and 1655 homage) are now becoming more sought after and the newly launched c 37mm sub has people like me even interested.

Better still - a circa 38.5 mm Tudor GMT is in the think-room too he said !!!!

This would make sense and I hope it is true.

I thought the introduction of opaline GMT was a measure to move the now-slow inventory of BB GMT model. The size is not really an issue, but the ~15mm thickness is. The BB Pro is 39mm but also with a rather unpleasant thickness and it is not selling well at all. Note the new COSC+METAS BB with thinner case and like you said, BB 54 with a thin profile. Better cases will slowly replace the older BB models.

So, still no updates? How can it possibly take so long for Rolex to evaluate this watch? As the owner I would be very unhappy with this service.

The latest update i got was that they might finish the evaluation by end of summer so maybe in 2 months time? As what Xeramic said, the longer it takes them the better for my watch.

They said by summer but still no update as of today from Rolex. I will be in London this October and plan to do a side trip to Rolex Geneva to inquire about my watch.

Well, you are a very patient soul, Eric. But a true collector needs much patience.

I have just lost 90 minutes of productive time by reading all of this thread.

It has been a very enjoyable diversion.

Some of the best minds in Vintage Rolex have opined, wagered beers, elucidated dial production, opined finishing, macro’d font inspections, etc.

So IMHO this is a very productive and respectful thread.

Of course I’ve subscribed and look forward to the future update whatever it may be. Much success in that outcome.

Now I can better appreciate why the Restoration Atelier price is high!

Many thanks for the insight 77T. It can be frustrating because of the wait and being at the mercy of the Rolex Heritage Dept. which, until now, i don’t understand what is taking them so long to inspect, analyze and determine the dial’s authenticity. Hopefully, it will be worth the wait.

Heritage can take years. Jedly mentioned in a recent MilSub post on insta that it took like 3 years for them to get the watch back.
