As we all know, when the Sub was first introduced to the world in 1953 it come WITHOUT crown guards. These were incorporated much later into the case.

My question is: Has anyone here ever put these guards to the test to find out how really protective they are?

Since I ruminate over the slightest scatch on my bezel, case or bracelet of any of my beloved Rolexs, Im going to go with no...thank god.

I don't know if anyone has ever put them to a hard test, but I will bet the reason Rolex put them on there is that with the originals I bet they had several crowns get banged up and damaged without the guards- thus the addition of the crown guards.

There's a good question. Did Rolex invent the crown guard? If so, there's another inovation that everybody has copied!

I thought these crown gaurds have more to do with water proofness rather than just protecting the crown. I was reading somewhere that these were introduced to solve a problem with making the crown more water proof.

Just my thoughts...

I allows the crown to slide off objects easier, rather than get snagged!

The crown guards have nothing whatsoever to do with the waterproofness of the watch.

Like I said, when the Sub was first introduced way back in 1953, it came in without any guards, but was still waterproof down to like 600 ft (?).

The guards are meant to protect the crown from sudden impacts in case the wearer gets too frisky!!
