Icon5 White Gold vs Yellow Gold SubMariner...Pix inside...

Ok so I'm like 50 and although pretty strong, I worry that If I get the Yellow Gold, I could be jumped... I mean, say for example your in Tahoe, or Vegas and your having a blast and you start walking to your room, and BINGO, some fools who have been watching you take a chance on getting that GOld whatever on your wrist.

Then on the other hand, you have the Blue Smurf. and you want to keep it low key and it does that very well. Some smart thieves would know about it, but they are into way higher level stuff than strong-arming someone...But then you see you friend from High School, the one that used to pick on you, or the acquaintences that like to show off, and you really want a Rock-off Piece, but he/they doesn't know white gold from white plastic... and you want to a little...

I am worried that once the cat is out of the box, you can't put it back in. I don't want to be that tourist that gets jumped while traveling in Europe, or Hawaii or any other tourist location.

Ideas, thoughts, stories...

I don't buy a watch based on which one I think will give me the least chance of getting mugged, or to try to show off to other people. I buy for personal satisfaction.

get the one you prefer and just be smart

A $10 gold tone department store watch looks the same from a few feet away. I wouldn't worry about it. As noted just be smart and enjoy!

Agreed.

And I would add not to buy a watch based on issues with your bully from HS, or acquaintances that like to show off.

Finally saw the 116619 yesterday and tried it on. That will be my next watch, the question is when!

I've never been a fan of yellow gold sport models for some reason. Rose gold is a different story though!

I agree with Tom again, life is too short and chaotic to worry about other things, if you are going to spend car money on a watch might as well get the watch that makes your heart leap the highest.

As to your old friends point, I was in my local charity shop just yesterday and the guy behind the counter recognised my face from school from over 20 years ago. I didn't recognise him as we were in different years and as I bought my £2 DVD I didn't think to pull up my coat and sweater's sleeves to show him my YG Rolex and show him the old boy done good. No, I just complained about the 5p charge for a bag. I mean in a charity shop as well?

For me I love the White Gold. The reasons are 2 fold. I am buying the watch for me, and I don't care if I am the only one that knows its gold and not steel, and second I believe that an all yellow gold watch is somewhat 70's, or old fashioned.
The true class statement, my me, is buying what I love and not caring about what other people think I have on.
I am currently still looking to get my wife the white gold pearl master, and have come very close to pulling the trigger with a forum member here. same story, white gold is a statement that is very humble.

If you are trying to decide on a watch for fear of being mugged or robbed, heck you should just wear a 10 dollar special from WalMart. Even my Hulk is a 9 thousand dollar piece, but I don't walk around with anxiety about getting jumped by a criminal.
Now I have said many times before, my PERSONAL GRAIL is the Yellow Gold Sub with Blue Burst Dial. It is just stunning, and exudes class. The Smurf just does not sing to me, as it does to many others here. But to each his own, buy what you will enjoy!

The YG Sunburst looks like an old mans watch, I doubt your going to get jumped or robbed unless you go out alone and act like a prick. Why don't you just get a TT Bluesy. It's like getting the YG and Smurf in one! Also you can get one by trading up a few bucks instead of doing that big drop. The TT has a lot more bling than the 116619, and it will have the same show off effect as the YG if your trying to be flashy.

Get the bluesy. After that you can decide if you still want the YG or WG.
Also you can thank me with Flemings gift cards at your earliest convenience for making this decision for you.

Better yet, keep the SD4k and buy the TT.
It would be cheaper than going full PM AND you get two watches!

In all honesty, I voted for the YG sunburst from your list of options...b/c that's what sings to me the loudest.

But, if what you're saying is truly a concern for you, and I was thinking of going down the WG route, I would recommend the BLRO.

I'd never buy anything that made me feel self conscious or nervous to wear.

YG vs WG doesn't really concern me in that way. I'd choose whichever you like best and wear it because it makes you smile.

Whatever you get, why not just wear it in situations where you feel safe and for special events (the aforementioned class reunion), and something else when you travel or venture into less savory territory?

Problem solved.

WG Smurf. That's always been a grail to me. I've also always admired those of whom can afford one of these PM watches, and choose to keep it a little low key with the WG.

I prefer the WG Smurf and the WG Pepsi a touch more than their YG counterparts...

Good luck, you can't go wrong with either!

I wear my yellow gold GMT when I travel to Vegas and Palm Springs. I used to wear one of my stainless pieces out of fear that I may get noticed by the wrong person flashing so much gold. It hasn't happened yet, unless you count getting hit on by prostitutes in Vegas casinos. Haha

I agree that you need to buy a watch that you really like and you shouldn't buy something just to show off or get noticed. But for me, I certainly don't buy a $30,000 watch just to keep track of time; my iPhone does a pretty good job of that.

A lot of people say you shouldn't buy based on anything other than making yourself happy. If wearing a yellow gold submariner when you run into your old classmate makes you happy, then that's exactly what you've done!

In my experiences, watches go largely unnoticed. It's unlikely the old classmate will have any clue that "you've made it" based on seeing your watch.

Life's short; I'd definitely get the yellow gold Sub!

Hypothetical, just for fun: If there were such a thing as a Platinum Sub (or, if you love the Platona as another option, for example) and it was within your budget, would you not go with that because it's a white metal and your HS nemesis might think it's just a SS model?

Point? Go for what you love and not what others will think.

P.S. Try to keep the SDc. That, paired with a PM Rolex, will make a great pair!

Good luck.

Yes, watches in general go mostly unnoticed unless there's a flash of color. Nobody ever noticed my SS Daytona, but I get a lot of comments when the green SubC.

I can only imagine a yellow gold submariner is like a beacon on the wrist .

I'll edit my previous post to say if a rose gold submariner is ever released, then maybe the 116619 won't be the next one for me.

I voted WG SUB. Love the Glidelock, the color, and the fact it stays under the radar.

I wear them and don't even bring them up unless someone asks. And it better be someone I know. If not, I'll refer them to my friend, Mr. Glock.

Or this option if you are concerned about getting jumped.
