Tropical dial??
still learning here. I've seen a few watches advertised as having tropical dials, I look at the dial and can tell no difference, can anyone tell me what constitutes a tropical dial?? I would really like to know.

Hey Michael,
I too have only recently learned about the "Tropical Dial." From what I understand, it's when a vintage watch that has been extensively exposed to sunlight (and perhaps a little humidity, though I find that unlikely in an oyster case) turns deep brown, rather than the black it originally was.

Hello.
A tropical dial or a tropical watch is a watch which was worn under the tropics. The dial and the patina turn to a brown or chocolate patina. Sometimes it s really chocolate and sometimes the dial seems to be black and with the sunlight on it, it becomes brown. Here are some examples of my Rolex 5513 with its tropical dial :

Good info. While we are at it, there is a similar term that I think maybe has a more definite meaning.
Some Rolex crystals are referred to as "Tropic". I believe that this refers to plastic crystals that do not have a cyclops, but I am not 100% sure on this. Anyone? Mark |
