Vintage Datejust on holiday

Hey everyone! I hope you’re well.

I’m on holiday at the moment and came across an old antique store in the old town, among all the treasure there was some vintage omega constellations, zenith dress watches and a Rolex Datejust which my partner instantly fell in love with. I’m only here for a couple more days and know how much home works goes into a purchase like this.. I remember this from my hunt for a 1675 and how the forum was so helpful in making the big decision.

I was hoping to share a few images here and get some opinions.. from what I can tell, the plexi has been replaced, it’s been polished on both the case and bracelet pretty heavy. The old chap said he’s remove the bracelet for me to see the serial and reference, along with showing me the movement if I’m serious in purchasing the watch.

Love to hear any of your thoughts guys!

These Date models are readily available and affordable. It seems unnecessary to rush into purchasing a heavily polished example on holiday, when you can easily find a better example anytime.

I'd take my time, do plenty of research and get a real gem of a piece instead. The wife might be a bit disappointed now, but she'll be pleased in the long run.

not even 35mm, its 34mm and considered mid-size which might be perfect for the wife but just don't pay datejust prices!

I don't see any issues with that watch at first glance, and it could be a nice souvenir of your trip. As noted, just make sure you are ok with the size, and that you making price comparisons with the correct reference. They are significantly less expensive than DJs.

Thanks for the messages guys - it’s greatly appreciated!. My gut was saying to hold out and do the appropriate research as it will be worth it in the long run. He wanted €4700 for it.

Have a great weekend!

Dodged a bullet. He has the only vintage Rolex in the town I was in, so I imagine he was trying his luck.

Dumb question: why is the Date inferior to the Datejust?

It comes down to size mostly…a smaller customer group (men) prefer watches in that size

Not neccessarily inferior, just smaller is the main difference

Those that enjoy wearing 33-34mm watches are very lucky, since they can find some fantastic quality and beautiful pieces at very reasonable price points.

Thank you. I started wondering if it came with a less reliable movement or something like that.

Cheers.

As others have said, more to do with size. It houses a 15XX movement just like many of its contemporaries at the time.

It looks a nice watch but 4.7k is a bit on the steep side - offer him 4k and see what he counters with.
