"VINTAGE" what is it?

I have read the posts and have not found what the cut off is. Or does it go by model number. Or date of mfg.? Dont know. Mike

‘Vintage’ is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma that only the chosen ones can begin to fathom… No matter how many threads are started on this subject only one thing holds true, more will follow.

None of those things.

There is no true definition of "Vintage Watch" even though the term has been around for decades, definitions have been a moving target.

If I were to make a list of things I’d miss if they disappeared completely, “What’s Vintage?” threads would definitely be top 10!

OK, apparently I did not search far enough. Its subjective and un-answerable.
I hate saying I have an old red-sub from 1969, because I was 21 yrs. old when I got it.
So Im pre-vintage. Which means Im old. I guess I will have to accept, Im old.

Sorry you had to find out like this but someone was sure to let slip at some point.

p.s. a ‘69 Sub is well within the generally accepted vintage timeframe

You (1948) and your watch (1969) both fall squarely within the vintage category. Here are two birth-year watches for you.

1969 or earlier.
(I was born in 1970, and I am clearly not vintage.)

Thanks for all the replies, even the few that made me feel dumb. If I have a question and I cant find the answer, I ask. I asked and got the answer. There is no definitive answer.
Thats OK, as a retired M.E., I have encountered this before. Thanks again.

How about some pix of your watch? There’s always an appreciative crowd for images of old watches around here

Vintage=when Rolex says they are returning the watch as no parts are available and you end up junking on eBay to get it running.

To 1675-David, no can do. red-sub is presently in the hands of Phil Ridley in Mesa, AZ.
Its probably in the sonic cleaner. I have asked Phil that no cosmetic buffing or polishing be done. Just internal movement maintenance. Even saving the original acrylic lens.
Phil is easy to work with and a true conservator. I have seen a few restored red-subs all polished up, and it just tuned me off. Every scar and nick is a memory. Mike

I have already asked for photos several times in a different thread. Not happening apparently. In response, the OP always repeats that no cosmetic work will be done in the restoration, so apparently this means there is no reason to post photos.

Dan S, aint got a camera! Its a run of the mill 1969 red-sub. Has a MkII/III red-sub
dial, perfect shape. The case has some nicks/scratches that will not be attended to. Why! because I dont care. If I want a new red-sub, I will go to the safe and pull one out that has never been worn. Same 2.5mil Sn. Mike

I was logging into the forum hoping to see one of the classic vintage watch topics.

“What is vintage”
“Which ___ watches should I buy as an investment”
“My uncle/grandpa/dad left me his watches, how much are they worth”

So what did we decide? Matte dial, or is it early 90’s now…
