If you were in this situation…

I have a 2009 Deepsea and a 2021 Sea Dweller 43. I love them both, but would like to expand my watch collection (I also have a Datejust 41, but would never part with it). I am tempted to sell one and either replace with a different rolex OR with 2 others (I have always liked panerai and IWC). So: which one would you sell, and what would you replace it with? Any suggestions welcome, but I would like a ‘rounded’ collection rather than another diver etc. my hunch is sell the Deepsea (I wear a shirt for work and it is a bit impractical) but I do love it. On the other hand the SD43 is beautiful, newer and maybe the one to hold its value? Nice dilemma to have I know, but I am no nearer deciding and always enjoy reading the opinions on here

If at all possible, add the next watch and see how it settles in to your collection.

That would be great but I would have to sell to buy at this point…

Never had the sea dweller but I have had both DSSD and I would lean toward the DSSD and keep them

The Pilots watch from IWC I think is a fantastic looking watch and comes in many complications. Would probably leave you some money left over after trading your deep sea.

I have always used the second hand market so definitely think that’s right. The Pilot’s woul definitely be on the shortlist, have always liked it. Also the portofino chronograph and panerai base are watches I’ve admired

I would move the DSSD if you must sell to buy.

I don't have a feel for the IWC nor the Panerai - they are tool watches and don't round out or balance a collection for me. I feel they are down market brands.

You'd need to add cash, but I'd say a PP is a better "rounding out" factor.

I'd sell the Deepsea and replace it with a more modern version with the D-Blue dial.
Then sell the SD43 towards an Omega, IWC or PAM.
Two new watches while still keeping a Deepsea in the collection.

Finding new watches is always easy for me. It is where to stop with them that has proven challenging. I would first find out the general value of your two watches in a cash sell and then a trade. I would then go out and see what it is that you like. Shop around and get your best deal for the most watch you can find and go for it. Part of the fun in the watch game is buying/selling/trading for me and a different watch and the research behind it add to the hobby for me. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Dangerous territory here...looking to trade a watch you love. I would advise against that.

For me, it would all depend on what the 'next' one is.

Be prepared to not get what you think your watches are worth in today’s market.

I chose a SD43 over a DSSD, so my suggestion is keep the SD43. But I’d figure out which IWC you want to replace with and sell the Rolex diver that covers all or most of the price.

I have a 2004 IWC Portuguese and really like it. I am a fan of the new IWC XX. It has the same movement at the new ingenur and costs half. I do like the IWC pilot watches, but finding myself drawn to more simple 3 hand watches these days over busy dials these days.

If it were me, I would wait until I had the financial means to buy first and sell later. Less chance of regrets. It's not like you don't have a watch and need one.

You won't like the trave value of a SD and you actually like owning them. I'd hold tight like mentioned above until you are ready to buy outright.

In this current market and for the price you would get for any potential sale and by that I mean you probably won’t get as much as you might think I wouldn’t be doing any deals. And tbh I get it if any potential trade was for an upgrade on what you have but I don’t see that with the watches listed

I have the DSSD in black and the sd43. Also a couple of Panerai and I had the IWC Aquatimer. I learned the IWC did not hold value very well and also difficult to flip. My experience. So take your time and I recommend pre-owned. Applies to Panerai as well but I do feel flipping a Panerai could be easier. Definitely pre-owned on Panerai or expect a large hit. Nothing retains value like Rolex. Also it’s easy to regret selling a Rolex, so keep them both if you wear both. DSSD is the king if I was forced to choose 1.

Since the OP, has to trade to make this deal, I like your line of thinking ^^^

If I had to choose, I'd keep the SD43 as I find it easier to wear. It's a big diver without going overboard in terms of girth.

I would possibly not trade any or sell any of the watches in my current collection rather save up and add, but if otherwise I'd sell the Deepsea.

This is the craziest hobby!
In post #16 above only a couple of days ago I rave about my DSSD. Today I put my sd43 on a nato (which I find the DSSD does not do well on) and it’s perfect. Back in love with this sd43.
So to answer your question - keep them both!! Do not sell!

sell the deepsea and keep the SD43, it's the best proportion case design in rolex lineup.

Sd43 red letter is a perfect all round watch.

Not so much seen in the wild, when it get discontinued will increase its value like the Kermit did long time ago. No one wanted Kermit till it get discontinued…

Deep sea is beautiful and is the 4th time I sell it because is a brick

This, though I ‘m not sure I’d sell either right now, because it’s so hard to get another. I definitely wouldn’t sell to buy a lesser brand.

Ive had the SD43 with the Red. Its lovely, but its massive. The DSSD even more so as you know.

For me i'd let the DSSD go and get an IWC Big Pilot 5004. You seem to like big watches and the 46mm Big Pilot is that. Its superb, I had one years ago and it was a magic watch. it looks fantastic.

If you've not owned IWC though, be ready for a substantial drop in quality of finish when compared with Rolex.

Tuck that Deepsea away and see if you miss it at all.

Thanks so much everyone! Have really enjoyed reading the answers, it’s why I asked the question! I’m sure no one will be surprised when I say I am nowhere nearer deciding

But the answers are really great. Lot of love for the SD43 (which is where I’m leaning) but still gotta love that DSSD. And who the hell put replacing it with the deep blue edition? OMG that’s a beautiful watch and I’ve somehow ended up with more options than a definitive plan!
