DSSD Intense Black Dial

Did anybody notice the DSSD ‘base black’ dial has been changed? It’s now intense black and has the Deepsea text in the same place as the D-blue model. Apologies if this has been covered, did a search and didn’t see.

I’ve never seen one of these in the wild, only the previous iterations.

Also, the d blue dial was updated too! They omit ‘Sea Dweller’ off both, cleans it up nicely! Definitely an improvement.

Was this done in April? I literally did not realize until today.

It was a change that coincided with the introduction of the 136660.
I wasn't aware of any change of apearance of the Black dial in terms of intensity per se.
But the 136660 has an Anti-reflective coating on the inside of the Crystal as a first for the DSSD line, which may well explain any change in appearance

No it didn’t change with the 136660, this is incorrect. This is a change within the last couple months across both dials, they have completely removed the ‘Sea Dweller’ text from both black and the dblue. The black dial also relocated the Deepsea text to the bottom half to match the dblue. Some greys are referring to these as ‘24 MK2 dials (after I researched more), as the ‘normal’ dial was in production at the beginning of this year.

Yes this was iterated alongside the release of the solid gold Deep Sea.

It's an ambivalent change for me, I prefer the regular SD anyway.

I figured it released in April this year and I just missed it. Usual Rolex silent updates, hah.

I recall that there was a lot of chatter about it here.

They removed the deep sea in april yes and made it 2 seperate lines.

The intense black dial is the same on the SD43 as well. Matte if you like.

Ah yes, quite right.
Now it's coming back to me where it coincided with the introduction of the Gold one

I think the removal of one line of text is a small detail, but 100% improves legibility. As it’s already a bit busy from the Ring Lock System. I believe I’m in for a JC now.

Edit- Attached pic of said MK2 dial for anybody wondering

Just call it Rolex Deepsea. Easy.

You realize it’s always been called the Deepsea Sea Dweller/DSSD since inception right?

I own 116600, 126600, 116660, 126660 and 136660. So I think I do?

But now we can you call it sea-dweller and deepsea. Nice and easy.

I misunderstood you. Yeah yeah of course easy to just split the names now and drop the SD moniker as Rolex has. It’s logical. But people have called it the DSSD for over a decade, no way the name doesn’t stick for most.

So to reiterate, the newest DEEPSEA is a winner in my book, and gains some legibility and I’m finally grabbing one

If it had the diving extension that they removed on the 12 series then yes!

I knew of the change to the text on the dial. I actually prefer the "Seadweller"
on the previous 2 generations.
I wasn't aware of the color change on the standard black dial. It was always a matte black but I'd like to see if there's a difference.

I believe I read in another similar thread they can add the extension to the 13’s?

No direct knowledge here, just my recollection of what was stated.

Intense black = matte black in Rolex parlance. This has been used for the past 1.5 years, if not more.

Although not all matte black dials are equal. For example, to my eyes the DS Challenge dial appears more matte compared to DSSD.

Of course the irony is that still have the Deep Sea Challenge Sea Dweller which has the Sea Dweller branding on it still.

I didn't even realize until you pointed out. That's hilarious as it's even MORE of a Deepsea model than the 136660

Didn't care for DSSD JC. Would be interested in all black DSSD.
