Moses gave away a free Rolex in NYC

I was in NYC this past week and on October 9th, a little after 3:30pm, I was sitting in the NW corner of Bryant Park at one of those green metal tables drinking a Diet Coke while my wife was ordering a coffee from a nearby kiosk, when I saw a dude with his posse walk up a small flight of stairs about 10 feet in front of me at the corner of 6th Ave and W 42nd St, whistle loudly and yell "Free Rolex, Free Rolex" and I instantly recognized it was Moses the Jeweler and quickly went over to see what was going on.

I follow less than 10 people on Instagram and rarely post, but I could not believe what was going on right in front of my eyes, that an Instagram famous Rolex reseller was filming a video. Moses held up a sign that was hand written "Pick a # 1-50 for a Free Rolex" and a only a few people gathered, probably assumed this must be a scam, and a few yelled out random numbers. I yelled out 25 and he said "nope" and when I saw nobody guess correctly, I started to count out loud, 1,2,3,4...all the way to 50 very quickly and said, I for sure got it (thinking I found a loophole) as there were no notices that only one guess per person, but Moses told me only one guess per person, but I was being filmed by his crew. He called on a city worker that was looking over at this crazy sight and prompted him to call out a number and when he said 27, Moses, said, "you got it" and honestly, the guy thought it was also not real, but Moses put the watch on his wrist, gave him the box and within a minute everyone disappeared.

I did get a selfie with Moses and when I told him I was not wearing my Rolex while sightseeing in the city as I did not want to get robbed, he said "that's probably a good idea" and laughed. I quickly texted my kids and a few friends some pics of the event to let them know what happened and the next day the video was posted on Instagram. In hindsight, I should have offered the winner $1,000 for the watch as he probably would have gladly sold it, but he pretty much wanted to leave as he seemed uncomfortable on camera.

This is one of those "only in NYC" things that happens and I just happened to be at the right place and time, but was two numbers off on my guess. Quite honestly, I am not sure if Moses really picked number 27, but he did give a watch to what seemed to me a totally random stranger and his 1.2 million followers seemed to love these videos.

As a side note, on the plane ride to NYC, actor Chazz Palminteri, the mafia boss dude and A Bronx Tale, was siting across the aisle from me and I also got a selfie with him when the plane landed, but I did not catch what watch he was wearing.

I have not bought or sold anything from him, but he is super charming in person and seems like a cool dude. His store is mega small (like 10'x10') inside a larger jewelry mall on 47th Street that gets way more foot traffic than any of the other 20 or so vendors.

The state of the market over recent years is because of ***** like Moses - going from one dealer to the next flipping, driving the prices up… no time for people like that

I posted that comment about wanting to buy the watch WAY AFTER it happened and sorta posted that as a joke as they guy was stunned and thought it was a joke or scam or fake watch and quickly left the scene. Also, I have no idea what the watch was (I think it was an older datejust) and would not even want it for myself and would have probably taken it back to Moses for a $1,000-$3,000 flip on him buying it back as he makes those videos too. But this was an AFTERTHOUGHT and never happened. Like none of you think of these things after the fact.

I am not sure I agree with that, but this happens with stocks, bitcoin, homes, boats, planes, cars, women, etc. so I really don't see any difference here. It is pure capitalism of buyer and seller demand and price arbitrage.

Moses seems to be a nice person and gives back allot and from what I’ve seen and I believe that it’s genuine. That it helps his business, bravo, what goes around comes around and there is nothing wrong with that. Moses is not the blame for what happened in the watch market, he is making a living as we all do.

Bill, was at the right place at the right time and almost won. Kudos! There is nothing wrong with expressing a thought. He met a movie star and a celebrity jeweler on his trip, sounds like a good trip to me. One to remember! Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

You weren’t ‘two numbers off’, if you guessed 27, you were never going to get that watch. If you notice, ‘the number’ is not written down or recorded anywhere. My guess is, he chooses the person he thinks will make the best content or who ‘he chooses’ to have the right number. The ‘winner’ didn’t submit a number, he was asked for one, whatever number he’s said was going to be the number because that makes the best content and makes him look the best. Giving the watch to somebody who could afford one was not the outcome he wanted. It his his watch to give to who ever he chooses, no shade being given, but everyone in that crowd was played.

What an incredible experience! It sounds like you stumbled into quite the event, especially with Moses the Jeweler giving away a Rolex. It’s amazing how these spontaneous moments can turn into memorable stories. The chance to take a selfie with both Moses and Chazz Palminteri is just the cherry on top!

Did you enjoy your time in NYC aside from that unique encounter?

Love 47th Street...have for my entire life...never been ripped off or treated badly either...

Way over-hyped, in both directions...anyone who has a chance to just go and see is missing out.
