Should I complain?

I bought a pre-owned GMT-II from a well respected dealer in London last week.

However it doesn't seem to be keeping time very well. I wound it fully, or so I thought - about 40 turns of the crown - before I went to bed last night at about 2300. It seemed OK at 0630 this morning when compared to my iPhone which I'd used as a reference the night before. However I've just compared the two again and the GMT has lost a couple of minutes.

Am I expecting too much from a pre-owned watch and should have it serviced myself? Or do I take it back and complain...?

Take it back and explain the problem to the dealer. If he is a good dealer then he should help

Take it back and complain. I don't think, rephrase that, it should not lose a couple of minutes in 7-8 hours. A dealer worth his salt will agree and sort things out. Did you pay with a credit card? if you did you will have a bit more protection if the goods are faulty.

Regards Billy.

Yes, it was paid for with a credit card for exactly that reason.

I don't expect to have any problems dealing with them, as I say they have a good reputation, but I just wanted to check I wasn't alone in thinking this was unacceptable; I've only bought new watches before (although my old Sub wasn't much better at keeping time! )

You cannot check any watch just over a couple of hours wind watch again and reset your watch not with the iphone.Try the speaking clock or any other reliable time source, then wear as normal.Check daily with same setting time source over 5 days then average out the loss or gain over those 5 days. Then if timekeeping is still out by more than -4 to + 6 seconds average daily have it regulated.

Thanks, that's the plan for the next couple of days...

short period of time checking and using an iphone as a base could be your problems.

try checking it over a longer period - say a week at least and use someting like online time website to check time against.

good luck mate.

That would annoy the crap out of me. Definately get it sorted with the dealer. Your watch isn't from Wal-Mart!

No, but then again, if you had read the other posts, you would have seen there may not even be a problem.

If it does turn out needing to be regulated, it's a pretty simple procedure and a good dealer should do it at no cost to you.

Agreed; there may not be a problem. But this thread was intended to find out what the general consensus would be if there was a problem.

Thanks for the input guys, seems I'm justified in expecting it to work properly.

How old is the GMT you purchased?

It's 5yrs old so perfect age for a service if it's not been done pre-sale... Which I thought it had but naively didn't confirm.

I would guess that it hasnt been serviced before...it doesn't hurt to confirm this with the place of purchase. Perhaps you should visit them, tell them the power reserve shortcomings of the GMT and see if they offer any solutions to your liking.

Im interested in hearing your progess.

Well, I took it back at the start of Jan and got it back today. Apparently it needed a new rotor arm and has had a general service too. They polished it up a bit as well, so it looks pretty good now.

They did try to make me pay (£160) for it but changed their minds when I reminded them I'd only bought it a few weeks previously.

If he is a respected dealer and a gentleman, he will take care of the issue. If not.....take it back.
Good luck!

Glad they got it sorted out... The rotor axle should always be changed at service, so I would say that, although it may have been cleaned and oiled, it was not actually overhauled and worn parts replaced........

You might still want to have that done in a couple of years........

Tom at 5 years a service might be needed and since you just bought it I would address the issue with the dealer and have them service it for you...
Best of Luck

The last Rolex I got a Sea Dweller didn't track time worth a damn the for the first 24 hours. After wearing for a couple of days it has been the last 8 months about +2 per day. I don't know if after sitting so long in the case was the problem but after the first day I was not a happy camper. An old watch marker told me once to keep track of the -/+ in a note book for a week.
