Hello everyone! I started a thread a while back introducing myself to the forum and asking for help regarding the whole purchasing process. I also recieved a ton of great tips regarding the watches I'm interested in (GMTIIc and Subc).

This past week I went and tried both watches at a Rolex Boutique here in downtown SF. I'll start off by saying if you have the pleasure of dealing with Ryan Torres, you'll be very happy. Very young guy, but excellent and very knowledgeable. I told him straight away that I was a few months away from purchasing as to not lead him on. He was extremely patient and first rate.

I've settled on the GMTIIc for good. After trying them both on, I was instantly in love with the GMTIIc. When we started chatting numbers, he said Rolex does not allow them to give any discounts whatsoever. I even told him when the time comes, I'll can pay in cash. Still nothing. I've read on the forum that it isn't unreasonable to expect 0-20% off on a SS GMTIIc or Subc. Something sound off here or did I come in with unreasonable expectations?

Some AD's discount, some don't. Some do certain models but not others. Subs are toughest, well, along with SS Daytonas.

It may also be due to the recent tightening of Rolex's already near iron grip over prices and their AD's. I have heard AD's that were discounting SS Subs as recently as a month ago no longer are.

When you're ready, a trusted seller in the forum can likely get you a BNIB GMTIIC with stamped, named and dated warranty for 10-15% off retail, and no tax.

Different ADs will give different stories. If you must buy from an AD, I would look around and keep plugging away--one will definitely give a discount.

HOWEVER, none of them, IMO, will ever match the service and prices of some of the trusted TRF sellers.

You cannot go wrong with DAVIDSW. Flawless from start to finish and his prices will put a smile on your face.

I was told something similar by the first AD I visited. I checked out a few more ADs, and ended up getting the biggest discount from the first AD who initially said no discounts. The difference was by now they realized I had done my research and knew that a discount was not uncommon.

Try a few more ADs. It doesn't mean you still can't go back to Ryan when the time is right and try for the discount - see what changes when he realizes he'll lose the sale otherwise.

Good choice on the GMT too.

Hi Charlie,

Afraid your expectations are extremely unrealistic...especially at Tourneau. They run the Rolex store you visited.

If you are set on buying in San Francisco, you will get the same 0% discount at Shreve near Union Square.

Stainless steel watches such as the Sub C and GMTIIC are Rolexes fastest movers. Tourneau can sell that watch for full price to the dozen wealthy tourists coming in behind you.

I know there are many stories of people who list high discounts on this watch. However, those stories - if true - very likely took place in a smaller city / town at an AD where the poster had purchased numerous watches and other jewelry in the past.

I would try the sellers here.

Think of it this way, some stores sell SS sport models very quickly and easily, they know they'll sell every single one they manage to get at full price, so, no reason to discount. Other stores might not have that kind of traffic or business, and a SS sport model might sit unsold, or, for some reason, they are able to get a bunch, and want to move them faster, it just depends on the store, their customers (willing to pay full price without blinking), and their allocation of watches.

Just factor in what pricing would cost with tax and see if its better to buy here on the forums. $7900 with a 10% discount plus tax is pretty much saving tax. Looks like the gmtIIc are running 7200-7400 BNIB from the sellers here. Is it worth the 500-700 for you to buy here? That is the question you must ask yourself. Paul

Try to buy from the seller whether here or an AD that you want to build a relationship with so you can work all the deals you want in the future.

As always, thank you all for the responses and advice. As silly as it may sound, I'm still leaning toward buying from an AD because this watch is being purchased to celebrate a major personal milestone - My wife and I want the experience of going in together and making the purchase and celebrating together. I know it may sound silly but it's actually important to us (much more to her I'll admit).

I contacted an AD in my old college stomping grounds which offered a 10% discount for paying in cash (and there is no sales tax as well). We'll see how this plays out.

If you get that deal, great, go ahead and pull that trigger. If you don't, get one from a Trusted seller and take the difference you save and have a great night someplace. Regardless, congrats!

10% discount and and no sales tax from an AD is is a GREAT deal! I would take it and run and celebrate with the wife as you wanted. I dont think you can get any better than that.

IF you do get a discount, it will probably be if you are READY, with money in HAND. Cash talks, and they won't commit to a discount unless they know YOU are ready to commit.

Unless it's a SS Daytona or a newly released model, discounts can be had. Also when buying from out of state, there typically is no sales tax unless that seller has a presence in the receiving state. Your local dealer can ship out of state.

Thanks, all. I too think it's a great deal. It's a smaller AD so I'm guessing they don't have a ton of volume vs the AD's here in San Francisco. I'll keep you all posted!
