What are your thoughts on the Ulysse Nardin watches?

I am looking into buying the Ulysse Nardin The Stranger watch. My only problem is that the brand isn't really talked about much. I would like to know if people like them or are they bad watches? I know the watch is expensive I just really like it. The design is awesome.

They put out some nice watches but that design does nothing for me. But good luck.

Ulysse Nardin have made (and continue to do so) some of the best watches ever conceived, but the brand name is one that has never really gained the traction it takes to become cultish. Even AP and PP are only getting there now as a result of the Insta-generation, and as many a WIS can be completely snobbish, plenty of good brands and models go absolutely unnoticed by them.
Whilst some brands get recognition for simply existing or actively court attention, others simply put their heads down and just get on with it. Therein lies part of their charm!
If you’re a brand whore, you’ll forget about it – if you’re a watch aficionado, then you’ve nothing to be concerned about.

Can’t recall off the top of my head who else has made a musical mechanical wristwatch, so this model may stand alone in that regard.

UN make and have made many amazing pieces - Trilogy of Time, Freak, Sonata etc etc. This piece is amazing.

The watch has catches my attention for a while already. The problem is that they are so underrated I didnt feel confident in purchasing my first UN. Thanks for the info.

Yeah I like the Freak series, my original thought was to buy one of those and see how I like the watch but eventually the whole go big or go home has been getting to me. If im going to buy a UN then I'm going to buy a masterpiece once and for all.

UN unfortunately in the USA do not have great "value retention". They are beautiful watches with many with VERY interesting complications/ views on horology.

Ulysse Nardin is a wonderful manufacture of haute horology. I am absolutely in love with their Marine Maxi Chronometer line and just recently pulled the trigger on one and am happy I did. Ulysse Nardin doesn’t follow conventional wisdom and their design language is a bit more overtly opulent than other maisons, and perhaps why they are the number one watch of choice of Russian oligarchs! I love UN and will never sell mine.

I’ve been looking at their El Toro as a cool but under the radar travel watch. Secondary market prices are a fraction of their MSRP. So I’d say if you get a nice price go for it. I’m trying to figure out what a nice price is. Because even though I’ve had “keepers” before, we do change our minds over time.

Indeed main reason why im going to buy a pre owned better. Getting it brand new and loosing most of it's value will be very disappointing

Welcome to TRF btw, but one of the first things we need to fix is your notion of going big. When it comes to UNs, then you’re talking about a Marine Grand Deck Tourbillon or a complete Trilogy set of #1s from the Astrological series.
There are a number of Freaks, if you prefer then style and size more, which cost more than the Stranger, so you can have your cake, and eat it.

I was looking for something off the beaten path and came across their newest diver, the fit & finish is next level stuff for sure, truly a high end piece in every respect

Very happy with it
