here an interesting one for you on patina.

heres a totally original 5517 that came out of the safe after umpteen years put away, its one of the best I've ever had.

here it is after two and half weeks in the aussie sun whilst I've been wearing it out on the boat.

the colour change in person is pretty dramatic its lightened totally, and faster than any other I've seen do it.

ps.side note...note the hands and dial have both aged AND lightened at different rates ...of course they have, made on different days and in different factories from different mixes of tritium based luminous compound.

Gorgeous. Just gorgeous. Do you think it will continue to get lighter with more sun exposure? Or if the change was accelerated by the sudden exposure to strong UV rays after being hidden away for so long?

i think thats it , we've had a really good two weeks of strong sun with high UV and I've been out sailing pretty much every day all day , so i think thats the 'safe/sock drawer' patina reversed, its the quickest I've eve seen it happen but then if its had 6 hrs of sun for 15 days .,.thats the like the whole of british summer doubled.

i wish i could capture the full extent on film but it gives you the idea. I'm gonna get another one similar out of the safe and try that one too :)

no ..its spoken for by a friend.who is desperate for a 5517 to finish his set..which is why i got it out of the safe in the first place

actually , the reason i paid attention to the patina was that he wanted it lighter and i assured him it would lighten up after a bit of wear out of the safe...just surprised how fast and strong that has happened.

Jed, very cool! An absolute grail watch and excellent to see photographic, detailed proof of such a dramatic change in a short time. Nothing like "live experiments" in the field. Hope you enjoyed your vacation and continue to enjoy that watch.

Jed, that's an amazing 5517 u have! Time traveler! 2 wks are way too fast for the patina shade to lightened, the sun is too strong. But still stunning mate:)

Absolute stunner, mate - may I have it please!?

Also, this completely replicates the patination experience I had with my 1680 from Eric, same with the hands too, which now have lightened up to match the hour plots exactly. The whole thing took a couple of weeks as well, which I documented at the time on TKF. It's been ongoing since, but less rapid, of course, and has settled on cream now. Thanks for posting. Cheers, Karl

2 weeks in the sun to lighten and then probably another decade in the safe to darken.

So a theory being discussed in an earlier thread that;

patina and unfaded bezel = stored in safe/not used much

no patina and faded bezel = the opposite,

could be contradicted by a watch with strong patina and unfaded bezel being worn in the sun for a while.....and that's why we love vintage

getting low, I'm down to three 5517 , one 5513/7 and one 5513....but i'll probably take it back down to the set of three references only as some days when you gets em out the duplication just seems silly.

yes karl. you know when you are ready there will be one waiting for you:)

Karl, I remember your thread illustrating the dramatic lightening of the lume / patina on your red. Interesting that Jed can mimic the same changes. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for the pictures of a true grail of grails.

Awesome - I think that day is somewhere in my future, hopefully. Maybe I'll auction one of my kids.

And yes, the duplication is silly, I agree

Cheers my friend, K
