Too polished ?

Hi all, just took possession of this 2009 Sub. Seller listed as “may have been polished in the past”. Well, it’s definitely been polished and now wondering if too much metal was removed. Lugs/ chamfers are sharp but look thin to me. Also one side is uneven. Bracelet looks good and coroner is still good. What’s the verdict? I’m within the return window and trying to decide.

Photos poor - Looks like a worn 15 yr old S.D. to me.

Imho a long way from needing a coroner yet ;-)

Show the sides so we can see the lugholes. That would be a better indication to see how much “fisheye” is evident on the lug holes. MAY have been polished means-DEFINITELY has been polished.

If the lugs are uneven, I would return the watch.

There's no way for us to quantify the amount of polishing. Yes, it has seen significant polishing. Only you can decide whether it's acceptable to you given the overall condition of the watch and the price. The photos are terrible and you haven't included the asking price, so we really can't provide much guidance.

The lug with its inside corner missing will always bother you. Walk away.

I don’t think that’s bad at all. Has it been polished, yes, but I have seen much much more extreme.

Yeah, I think I may have been overthinking it a bit. I’ve been bonding with it over the last few days and think it’s gonna stay

It looks OK for an '09 watch which hasn't spent its life locked in a safe.

Yes it looks ok but that’s not the finishing and grain grading Rolex uses on this watch,

The finish despite the pictures looks almost pearlescent, the kind you would find more on a Tudor. On this watch you’d expect a sideways grain on the lugs amongst other things.

Someone has just done a standard polishing wheel job on this. Like I said it isn’t bad, just not to spec. Rolex would most likely restore it pretty well. Only major concern is the bottom right lug looks a little skinny

If you are going to keep it forever maybe it’s fine. If it wasn’t as described then return it. Maybe they can source you another. But likely would be more expensive from that same dealer. Maybe you need to buy the best quality you can afford but up your budget $1-2K. Savings some bucks up front sometimes doesn’t make sense. Maybe just wear it and forget about it. Some things to think about.

Thanks all. I’m past the return window so it’s mine now, flaws and all. Appreciate all the advice and apologies again for the bad photos: user error with the compression app

Agree - and it's original as far as I can see...and if priced well, be fine for me.

Tough crowd !

The lugs on the on most all Rolex watches like 5 series subs are very slightly thinner on the crown side like it has been for the past 40 plus years.

Not too thin - just wish they wouldn’t have rounded the lugs the way they have. Otherwise not bad. Hope you got it for a good price.

I think it looks fine. I’ll bet you got it for a good price.
The lugs on those older ones can play tricks on your eyes, depending on how the watch is positioned. When was it last serviced? That would be a more important question to me.

It looks fine, it's a used watch in good condition.

The lug contour on the backside is significantly different than the swooping contour on the crown guard side. Staring at them is an optical illusion if you are looking for mirror imaging.

Untouched example.

Decent price (not great) but came with full set B&P which is what I was looking for. Yeah, i was probably over analyzing. I really like the 5 digits and have been yearning for a 4 line 14060 for a while. Starting to get much more comfortable with this one. As always, the advice here has been very helpful (naysayers and all :))

Very good shot Larry.

I really wish everyone would store that image and overview in their mind, before shooting from the hip !

Same on crown guards - eg that top and bottom often different dimensions.

Looks fine for a 15 years old sub. I can tell that it's been polished, but not to a point that would bother me. If you sit across the table from me wearing it, I would have no clue that it's been polished.

If you want a unpolished 15 years old sub (or any old watch) in mint condition, be ready to pay a premium over the average price.

Really, the top lug is thicker than the bottom lug crown guard side? Whilst I see that also in the picture, what is the reason for this? I understand the asymmetrical design for balance across the wrist to account for crown and guards but why is the bottom right lug thinner than top right?
